What are my chances of getting to Stony Brook

Female
From Queens, NY
Moved to US freshman year from Poland

Stony Brook is on top of my college list and I want to know how are my chances of getting in. My gpa is around 95%, I got 630 on the Math section and 520 on the English section on the NEW SAT. My English score is low due to the fact that I moved here freshman year and didn’t know about SAT until junior year when I took the PSAT. Currently I’m taking 3 AP classes - AP Calculus, AP English, and AP US History. Junior year I was in ELA honors and US history honors. I took physics and chemistry and passed the regents with 78 and 79. I have a lot of extracurricular activities, I’m going to list the major ones:

  • President of the student government 2016-17
  • Sophomore representative 2014-15
  • NHS 2015-currently
  • Math/Chess Club
  • internship at court square studios (video/filming related)
  • 3 years of high school and club volleyball (captain on the school team since junior year)
  • senior committee
  • community service in Polish&Slavic center-senior club “Krakus”
  • volunteered during Breast Cancer Walk, AIDS Walk, Best Buddies Walk
  • Teacher’s Assistant
    And many more

My rank is 9/206 (I’m in the top 5%)
I have 2 recommendations from my teachers (math&english) and one from my coach.

The High School I go to is a small school and they don’t offer as many AP classes and other challenging classes at other schools in the neighborhood

I know my English section is very low but I re-took the SAT in early December and I’m hoping for a higher score.

Please let me know where I am standing.

Thank you for any comment

Your SAT scores - while they maybe considered a little low for a regular student …however, the fact you had just moved here from Poland prior to starting high school and have gotten those scores and done well in class, shows you are quite intelligent and have worked hard, I think you have a decent chance at getting in.

You should get in as they will take the fact that you’re not a native English speaker into consideration. Best of luck to you.
