Gpa will hurt a lot in private schools listed since you are un-hooked. Since UCs weigh gpa the MOST Important aspect of your application. If you explain your gpa to private schools/ UCs, they will most likely be more forgiving.

Cornell- 7%
Harvard- 0.4%
Princeton- 0.4%
UPenn- 0.6%
Berkeley- 25%
UCLA- 25%
CMU- 40%
Dartmouth- 0 -12%
UCSB - 40%
Amherst - 5%

There are top schools that care less about GPA, such as UChicago, which ranks gpa less than test scores and superscores the ACT. (They are also more sympathetic to misfortunate stories than Ivies.)

One more thing: are you a URM? If you are, multiply the chances above by 1.6x. Race most likely accounts for between 10-20% of private school applications and could push you into Ivies.

I think chances from poster above are extremely harsh. You have a better chance than that. I would say solid chance at cornell and dartmouth around 30%, Ucs will be lower, 25% HP will be closer to 5%, penn 15%. CMU is right on, amherst will be higher 35%, you’re in at UCSB

are you an international applicant? I assumed you were. If not then slightly higher chances than what I said.

UC GPA calculator: https://rogerhub.com/gpa-calculator-uc/

If OOS, you only get extra honors points for AP/IB or DE courses taken 10-11th grades. Also be aware of the UC a-g course requirements: http://www.ucop.edu/agguide/a-g-requirements/

If in-state for California, you can look your HS honors designated courses for the honors points: https://hs-articulation.ucop.edu/agcourselist#/list/search/institution

I did my elementary, middle school and freshman year in India, (born in US though), then moved back to USA. But I moved in halfway through semester one in 10th grade and got a few B’s then.

Also, I have taken like more than 8 semesters of AP or honors classes so my UC GPA is around 4.1-2

I’m also a CA based student

@kjake2000 I’m not being “extremely harsh.” I’m going off of the Common Data Set of colleges, not based on premature assumptions about the college application process. At top Ivies, only 1% of students have a 3.7 and below, based on their CDS released data. Also, OP is an Asian male-which is the most competitive pool at top colleges.

but do all applicants have the same extra curriculars and act score? I understand gpa is the most important factor, but it is not the only one. @AshleyMisAwesome

Nothing can compromise a mediocre transcript. I’m not saying that it’s the only factor- but it is one of the most important factors- if not the most important. @kjake2000

The school I go to is a relatively competitive school and my GPA is in the top 10℅ of the students. Does this help in any way? Also what about schools like umich and uiuc?

My best advice: You should try some lower tier schools. It never hurts to apply to a range of schools to test your chances. Yes, do try Umich and UIUC, as well as lower tier UCs if you live in Ca. I’m not sure how your GPA will be interpreted in rounds, but GPA is so so important, unless you have an extreme hook. Work on that Sr year class rigor and grades. These are academic institutions and academics matter. The mistake too many people make is disregarding academics for the sake of Ecs. ECs and subjective factors can push in an applicant, but it can’t ever save the application, especially in the competitive environ of elite schools, where the admit rate is so low. I would say, apply ED to one of your schools. The point now is to maximize your chances, and SCEA to Harvard or Princeton is a waste. Apply ED to Amherst, CMU, or Dartmouth. Those are schools where ED helps alot. RD will be brutal, not only for you but everyone else. I wish you the best of luck, but also be smart with your choices. (:
