I'm a senior at one of the most rigorous and highly selective high schools in the country. Since it took me a while to adjust, my GPA is very low(3.01) but my transcript definitely has an upward trend leading up to my final senior GPA which should be about a 3.7 un weighted (taking all honors and 1 AP). I was diagnosed late my junior year with ADHD, which after taking medication has improved my grades. I'm a black girl who sails competitively which is very rare, I also work as a certified instructor teaching adaptive(disabled) sailing during the summer. I've been in contact with the sailing coach and I'm officially being recruited and he'll have some sway in the application process. I have a 28 ACT and a 29 super score. I decided to wait and apply ED II to Tufts because I wanted to show first quarter grades. What do you think my chances are?

Since Tufts has a holistic process for evaluating applicants, I wouldn’t compare what happened with a particular candidate last year. Test scores and GPA tell only the quantitative aspect of a candidate, Tufts also looks at qualitative items – such as passion for a particular EC, essays, and recommendations. Additionally, the pool varies from year to year, so the comparisons would not be the same. If Tufts is truly the place you want to be, then that should be the deciding factor in applying ED.

It looks like your response might have been intended for the question about ED2, and ended up here by mistake…

Estimating the chance of admissions is really tricky, so as a rule, I don’t attempt to do it.

The sailing coach would probably be the best judge of your chances, (he has been around since the early 80’s) what does he say?

Here is something from the sailing webpage, in case you have not seen it already.

By the way, getting recruited for sailing is impressive. Tufts competes in the highest division in that sport and is very successful.

Have you had a chance to see the new boathouse on the lake?

Yeah I went to visit Tufts and got to see the boathouse and meet the coach and team. What a beautiful facility! The coach says that it will be difficult. But, it’s possible.

All seven sailing recruits who applied ED got in. Not many were girls, although one had a 3.7 GPA unweighted with honors and AP courses and 2160 SAT (CR 700, M 710, W 750) and SAT II US History 760 and Math 1 710. Ken probably gave some students the extra push but I think they were all definitely qualified. Awesome essays help!
