Nope not a joke, was just thinking of out of the box ways that you can still evolve your learning of architecture through different or non-direct avenues. Studying Latin could take you to Italy where you study ancient architecture. Oceanography and atmospheric science could play a huge role in zero emissions architecture. Remember that even the development of the artificial islands in Dubai combine knowledge learned in far more than a simple “architecture” class. There is a whole world of knowledge out there.
Think if it this way, the admissions office is looking for that well-rounded student to bring a certain dynamic to campus. Any profession you go into, is going to want a well-rounded individual as well. The more you explore, the more you can bring to the table. Any architect can design a building and put a garden up top to help keep the building cool, help lower CO2, perhaps provide vegetables for its residents. BUT if that architect knows nothing about permeability of soils, water runoff, weight load bearing, how acidity or alkalinity of soils effects different materials used in the plan, the building could be a disaster from the start. But one who maybe spends some time on a school trip to Africa building potable water systems for remote villagers could bring something to the table in ways you never even thought of before. So basically, don’t limit yourself. That doesn’t mean you have to give up your dream, no way! Opening up other doors and opportunities rather than hyper focusing just lets you bring so much more to the table in the long run. Carpe diem - seize the day!
Thank you for this! I looked through it and I do find it very cool. The reflective glass reflects its surroundings and, as people could probably tell from the name, makes the building almost invisible when viewing from ground level, especially from a distance(probably not so much for the top view though). The changing lights at night is also a great addition. I personally find the interior a bit unconventional but some people could definitely find it to be their perfect home. Overall, I appreciate the effort of admiring Joshua Tree and I think the concept of an invisible house is very interesting.
You’ve definitely opened a lot of doors for me in my mind. I could‘ve never imagined what knowledge taking a language class would give me about the environment. I now see that not architecture nor environmental studies can be limited to just one topic. To truly pursue either there’s a lot to be learned. Sure, having an architecture 101 book that can just cram all the knowledge you need into your brain would be nice but that’s not the case so I’ll be exploring a lot more than just a course titled architecture or environment. Thanks for all your help!
Not just the architectural design, but it is also highly sustainable and environmentally friendly. I’m not sure if that was highlighted on the website. It’s pretty incredible.
I searched around some more and I finally found an article that talks about its environmental impact. The website and tours that I viewed didn’t mention anything about it so I assumed it didn’t have anything related. I think that the low-emissivity glass is a great idea for preserving the natural environment in Joshua tree. The photovoltaic panels are also a nice attachment since they can transform sunlight straight into electricity for the home. Thanks for informing me about this
Just caught your comments about the deadline being so near and realized that you mean to apply this year for admission in September 2023.
I’m not sure what your situation is regarding letters of recommendation, but it may very well not be possible to get everything submitted in time. There’s the stuff you can control (your essays), but then there’s also the parents responses, letters of recommendation, transcript, etc.
If it doesn’t happen for you this cycle, you can always apply next year either as a new 10th grader, or as a repeat 9th grader (a not uncommon thing at these schools).
Good luck!
ETA: there’s another thread in which people are talking about deadlines being extended (Groton already pushed to the 16th) because of issues with Gateway. So you may have an additional day…
Yes, my apologies for the confusion . I’m trying my best to cram in at least one more application in addition to L’ville. It’d be a relief if they extended the due date to next Monday. I’m not too worried about the other things but getting my transcripts in on time would be a major issue.
By the way I have a question. I’ve seen so many eighth graders applying to L’ville with amazing achievements(ex. National awards, science or math Olympiad medals, soccer tournament champion, etc.). As I’ve stated in my OG post, I’ve been playing cello, volleyball and art for many years now, I love my hobbies. However, I have almost no awards to show for them and no awards to show off my academic abilities. Growing up I’ve never really thought about the competitive scene and I didn’t know that these opportunities existed. Im very confident in my skills but I’m afraid that the AOs would think I don’t care about my ECs because of my lack of awards. Does having little awards hurt my chances of getting in?
Also, I’ve seen other posters say that communicating directly with the head of a department you’re good in (ex. Soccer coach or orchestra director) would be helpful in getting accepted, is that true? If so, how should I start off the conversation and what should I ask them about?
At least for music, awards don’t matter that much. Neither does where you sit in your school orchestra. What matters is if the music director and, sometimes, the school’s main teacher on your instrument, likes your playing, thinks you have potential, etc. Your application should include a video of your playing a significant piece on the cello, for example. If it’s pretty advanced and really good, and you’ve indicated a desire to continue in orchestra or more at boarding school, it should help your chances even if you have no awards on the instrument. I do not think it is necessary to contact the music director, because the admissions committee will forward videos to him/her as part of the evaluative process.
That’s good to know. However I’ve already submitted my application to L’ville without a video of my playing(at the time I thought they just mean’t YouTube videos of concerts or recitals) and there’s no way to edit my application. Is there any way for me to still show them my cello skills?
Don’t go off the internet. I didn’t have any academic awards as an eighth grader, and neither did most of my classmates. Most people who post on the internet are the ones most confident in their profiles, but they’re a really really small percentage of the applicant pool
My niece just finished her BA in Art History at Cal. She had very good admissions to architecture school and is now at UCLA. Her math was fairly weak and they required some additional math before she started though. There are many paths to most goals.
Honestly this does make me feel a lot better about my application. I’ll try my best to get into Lawrenceville. By the way, could you answer some questions for me?
Do you think it’s worth it to change my status from day student to boarding student for a better chance at admission?
Also, does a student attending public school or private school before applying matter to L’ville?
Last but not least, what do you think Lawrenceville values most when considering a person to join the community/ harkness table?
I’m applying to Lawrenceville too but I think I can answer one of the questions,
Day Student’s applicant pool is much harder (ahem…ahem… west windsor kids) and being a day student at L’ville seems to be pretty tough, you get home pretty late every night.
However, you can only switch to apply for boarding if you don’t live in any of these towns. I live right outside the cutoff and I chose to apply for boarding. Just make sure you actually like a boarding environment and not applying for boarding just to get in since it is definitely not suited for everyone.
I see… I had no idea choosing boarding or day would affect your chances when I was applying so I just casually chose day. Thanks for the info and I hope you get in! it’d be cool if we could see each other on campus in the fall
So I can’t directly answer your questions, as I don’t work in admissions, but I hope this information helps.
If you live more than ~25 minutes away from the school, you should probably be a boarder no matter what. Day student admission is more competitive than boarder admission, but FWIW I know ~5 day students who live far enough away that they should be boarders compared to 0 boarders who live close enough to be day students (the geographical restriction shown above did not exist when I applied).
Off the top of my head, the day students in my grade are 50/50 previously attended public school vs previously attended private school. Unless you go to West Windsor-Plainsboro (shudders), your school probably won’t affect your chances.
While I don’t exactly know what the school’s particular admissions criteria are, here’s a line (paraphrased) I remember that stood out during Convocation/new student induction this year.
“These students are international award winners, founded non-profits, (insert other amazing achievements). But more than that, they’re a group of nice kids.”
I think that speaks volumes.
Good luck, and let me know if you have any other questions!
This really helps me out. I really see how much Lawrenceville values character from all I’ve learned from them. Also, what’s up with the west Windsor-plainsboro kids? Another poster also said something about them so I’m a little curious
West Windsor-Plainsboro is just this really really competitive school district that’s ~15 minutes from Lawrenceville, so a ton of people apply. A friend of mine from there once told me that out of the 200 applicants from the district that year, only 5 got in (in fact, more got into boarding schools like the Phillips Academies et al).
Dang, that’s really sad. 5 out of 200 kids? And it’s a very competitive district too… I thought it would be something like they send half their applicants to L’ville or something lol
