what are my chances?

so.. I know you guys must get plenty of these, but I'm very much curious about my chances of getting in. I have WA residency, and I heard that makes a bit of difference. so here they are:

3.52 GPA

5 years social sciences (including AP's and college-level classes)

4 years science, math, English (including honors classes)

2 years foreign language (Spanish)

(I had a 4.0 until my junior year, and in my personal essay I included why my grades dropped. I had really hard family situations that year, because it was the year that I came out to my family as a gay. haha, it's awkward saying that to peers as opposed to the admissions office, but I just thought I'd explain.)

1900 new SAT

580 critical reading

640 math

680 writing

I don't know what else to include. I was in FBLA for 3 years, went to state competitions. I have hours upon hours (in the hundreds) of community service, mostly church-related. I was sophomore class vice-president, and although I don't hold office now I'm still in our student council. also, I am graduating with a ton more credits than I need to graduate.

all of the statistics just sorta.. left my mind.. at the moment, so maybe I can get some feedback? thanks for your time; I appreciate it.

I noticed 39 views, no replies.. does that mean I have very little chance, or..?

hi i never venture a guess on these 'what are my chances' threads but u deserve a reply or 2 or 10. so far on CC the acceptances have been to academic superstars, some of whom prefer other schools besides the UW so the rest of us are wondering about the chances of someone with an UW gpa a lil under their midrange UW gpa, very good but not jawdropping sat/act, lots of hard classes all 4 yrs, excellent ecs. u have all this plus something the new 'holistic review' was designed to address. they are gonna read yr essay carefully i would think sexual preference and the agonies of coming out would elicit their compassion good luck w/this and all yr other endeavors my intuition sez the lower gpas will have to wait for an april acceptance remember, last yr's published mid 50% gpa was 3.53-3.90 and sats were v-520-640, m-550-670 and act 23-28

Yes, you would definitely have a shot at admission, especially under the new holistic review process that the previous poster described. It seems like you took challenging courses and have tons of community service, which many academic superstars lack themselves. I'm thinking your SATs are a tad bit low, but that certainly shouldn't discourage you. Why only 2 years of language, if you don't mind my asking? Usually UW requests (or recommends) 3. As long as you put your best work forward on your admissions essay, then hopefully you will get in and I will see you on campus as a freshman next year. Good luck!

my school doesn't even offer three years of a foreign language. it isn't an option. there are about 500 students in my school, so I really don't have many choices at all in that area.

what SAT score range would you say UW is looking for?

my cute handbook i got at the uw info session sez 2 yrs of foreign lang under core subject requirements/admission requirements. CCers expect more but we will see what UW does. today the WA state senate voted 25-23 to approve a gay rights bill that prevents discrimination. . . weird that the vote was so close, weird that it took so long

btw what is a 1900 new sat like an old 1220? am I close?

anyway, good luck buena suerte

a 1900 is a 1270 for the old SATs.. so, I'm not sure how good or bad that is.

well, your 1270 falls into that 25%-50% range they posted from the students they accepted last year. last yr's 25th percentile gpa UW was 3.53. that's you. you took and exceeded all the courses for the core reqs. you have great ecs. you are in-state. if you were looking at a friend's stats like this what would you say? you are qualified but not over-qualified; this school is a possible soft match for you but not a safety. you won't hear early. (when did u apply?) imho they should crawl to your house and beg you to attend. i hope your essay is well-written as well as poignant. consider an extra letter of rec if this is your 1st choice school. perhaps a phone call from paul allen.

lol i like your posts artista

If you have any contacts at UW whatsoever, you should use them to your full advantage. For instance, I corresponded with the Dean of the School for Architecture and Urban Planning (my intended major is in that school) and sufficiently impressed him to get a letter of recommendation. This might be a little more difficult if you're not in the Seattle area, as I had to visit him in person twice to fully communicate my interest in his program.

But this is only cursory suggestion. The core of your application, aside from grades and SATs which are respectable (you can't do anything to change those right now), is your essay. As long as you wrote a coherent essay (I too would recommend letters of rec, from anyone who knows you well), you should have a very good shot at admission. Did you include in your application the fact that you went to a smaller school with more limited course offerings? That might work to your benefit, just a thought. Good luck!

well, I already sent in my application.. it didn't ask for letters of recommendation, so I didn't send any. my counsellor had said if they don't ask, they usually don't want them. is that not true?

and if I should've sent them, should I just mail them out asap, or.. what? how do I go about doing that?

Yes, I would send them out ASAP. But this depends on your status. Are you under full review or initial review? If you are not in either of these two stages, then it's probably not worth your while to send out letters of rec., but otherwise it can only help your chances. While UW may technically say it doesn't want letters, under the new policy of comprehensive review, it will definitely bolster your application. Good luck!

what do u think of the acceptance of falconpower1? very interesting, non? hope happens . . . . . .

Do you guys think sending in a letter of recommendation would really help? My counselor called the school to ehem talk with an admissions person about me and he asked if I should send in a letter of rec and they told him they wouldn't even read it. I wonder if that is true. Cause UW is my first choice and I don't have thoes "steller" stats and my status is full review..applicaiton sent in in October.

didn't you answer your own question? admission office probably wouldn't read it. the only colleges I sent recs to were the ones that required them.

also, with your stats, you should be able to get in...so don't worry!

The thing about CC is that..the people that post here wanting to go to a specific college and post their stats tend to represent the very best (this is only my opinion)... it's not like everyone on CC that posted their stats for UW represent the majority of the applicants, so no need to worry about having such "stellar" stats unless you want a scholarship from there. Your application is probably up there in the pool of applicants.

BTW, I hope you get in...it is also my first choice, and your stats are close to mine (3.69, 1340/1970, similar # of years in courses). Good luck.

Haha very true SChoe101. You are probably right about the posts on CC. I was sorta thinking that myself. Best of luck to you too! :)

if I applied after the scholarship deadline, do I not get financial aid, or..? god, I hate this college crap. I don't get any of it.

I seriously wouldn't stress about the SAT thing at all. I read somewhere on these posts that 25% of the U Penn students scored less than a 1300 on their SAT's, that Stanford rejects approximately 60% of their 1600 applicants, and uh... Adam Kotaich got into UW with ZERO AP classes, two college credit classes, a study hall every year, and a 1210 on his SAT's.
