I haven’t been looking long, but U Rochester looks like it might be one of my top choices
Current junior
GPA: 3.51 UW 3.91 W (probably be a 3.56, 4.01 after this trimester)
Class Rank: 44/317
ACT: 33 (31 E 32 R 34 S 36 M) retaking in june, hoping for a 34
Honors/college courses: Honors Spanish III, Honors Precalc, AP Euro, AP Lang, AP Calc BC (all sophomore year), Linear Algebra/DE course over summer, and taking AP Chem, AP Physics C (M), AP Lit, Calculus III, Partial Differential Equations, Intro to Higher Mathematics this year.
Activities/EC’s: Marching Band (10th grade-present), Pep Band (10th grade - present), Fencing (8th grade - present), Math Team (joined this year)
Academic team (joined this year)
Projected AP/college courses for senior year: APUSH (all year), Fall Semester: Linear Algebra, Geometry, Real Variables I Spring Semester: Real Variables II, Elementary Theory of Numbers and Complex Variables(this may not be offered, in which case I’d probably take an introductory calc bases prob and stats)
I would think your chances would be pretty good assuming your AP scores are decent, but you’ll never know if you don’t actually apply.
So far I’ve had Lang: 3 Euro: 3 and Calc BC: 5 and I’m predicting, for this year, a 3 in Lit, and 5’s in Physics C Mech and Chem. Is there anything I can do to improve my chances?
Plan a visit and schedule an interview with somebody from admissions to show interest - Rochester is big on that.
I live in Kentucky, so a visit might be difficult to do. Is there anything else I could do?
The classes you have taken are challenging, which is good, and your ACT is good, but your gpa is a bit low. Not to say it will keep you from being admitted, though.
If you can’t visit, try this: http://enrollment.rochester.edu/visit/off-campus/#tab4
They will send admins to various parts of the country to meet with you and interview, or may have you interview with a local alum.
They will also do phone interviews with alums. That’s what happened with my D.
Alright, I think I’ll look into doing some sort of interview, then.
So are you not planning on visiting your schools? It’s a big investment for sight unseen. If you’re from KY, you should also go in the winter to see if you can handle it.
I mean I’d like to visit, I’d just have to convince my parents
My son had an interview with a recruiter when the recruiter was visiting in our area, so we were able to accomplish this and stay local. It is cold in Rochester. I am not sure you need to go there in the winter to figure out if you can handle it. If you end up going to the school you should buy a good coat and hat and some other warm clothes.
It is fine to visit after you are admitted, when you are finalizing your decision if you cannot travel now to visit every prospective school.
