What are my chances?

Hi! I am new to the CC forum. I am a sophomore in high school at a public school in VA.

I am really considering Brown University as one of my top choices. I want to know what you guys think my chances are! I would love feedback.
All stats are current as of April of Sophomore year
So far in high school, I have never gotten less than an A as a final grade in any class (including three high school classes I took in middle school). My unweighted GPA is a 3.9 since I got a few A-. I took two APs freshman year (AP Euro, AP Enviro). I got a 3 on Euro and a 5 on Enviro. I got A’s in both classes. Right now I am taking three APs (AP Bio, AP Gov, AP Psych) and I am really working towards getting 4s and 5s. My freshman year grades were good but I had 3 A minuses. Sophomore year ends in a month and all grades are above 98 except one 97 and one 95. So I am doing much better. Any core class that is not an AP is honors. Next year I am taking 4 APs/Dual Credit courses and senior year I am taking 5.

I havent taken the SAT yet but I will take it in August. I am taking the SAT II Biology in 2 weeks. I am expected a favorable outcome since I have taken a few practice tests and I have gotten in the 700-720 range (before studying) so with a little more work I can do better.

Out of school I do many things. I have done debate for 5 years and I will continue until senior year. I am guarenteed to be captain senior year. I founded the Model UN team at my school and I am the president. I also began a fundraising initiative since the Hopkins conference we attend is expensive and the school does not have funds to pay so I began a financial aid program for students to attend. I am a debate coach for middle schoolers and I also get volunteer hours for that. I am also a judge for the county middle school debate league and I judge every tournament. I am a regular volunteer at my city’s free clinic. I have been on my class’s student board for two years but I dont really do much for that and I am not planning on mentioning it. I also founded a Mental Health Awareness club at my school. I am also part of a youth activist group that I co-founded and we did things like go to DC for the March for our Lives, organize a Town Hall for Our Lives where the public could speak to congressional candidates about gun control. We were inspired after the Parkland massacre.

Recently, I just got an internship to work for a United States HoR candidate (democrat) in my state which should be great. I have to spend 10 hrs a week for that. I first met the candidate at the Town Hall I organized, so I will be helping her campaign.

Other than these things, my hobbies are cooking and gardening. I absolutely love cooking and gardening. I even use the things I grow in my food. yum. I could do these two things forever. As far as music, I played the trumpet for 4 years but I quit playing for school because I didnt like the sole focus on winning recognition for the school rather than individual development. I do a little bit of dance and I am getting into Indian classical music.

Anyway, overall I am a diligent worker but I have a tendency to procrastinate haha.

I know this is long but any thoughts would be appreciated!

Again the question is what do you think my chances at Brown University are.

*** edit. I know weighted GPA isn’t looked at as much as individual grades since everyone has a different scale, but my current GPA is 4.52. This is self-calculated since my gpa and rank hasnt been updated by the school yet but at the end of freshman year it was 4.341 and my rank was 23 out of 300. This rank is obviously higher now since i am at 4.52 but i dont know specificailly yet.

*** another edit. I dont know if this is important but I am Indian-American. My parents immigrated from India and I was born in the states. My mom has 2 bachelor’s and 1 Master’s all from india, and I think my dad has a Bachelor’ but neither of them are using their degrees. They have a small family business. I dont know our exact income but I wouldnt consider us LOW income, but we are defnitely somewhere in the central/lower middle class.

I’m not an admissions officer, so I can’t give you real feedback. What I can say is that you seem to be on the right track. You have high grades, good extracurriculars, and passion.

I was accepted to Brown, but some of my friends with similar stats (and many extracurriculars) weren’t. With competitive schools especially, it’s very hard to predict whether or not you’ll be accepted. Schools look for “fit,” and it’s really hard to know what that means.

What is important is that you enjoy high school. Spend time with your friends, try something new, go on an adventure. Don’t spend high school tirelessly studying and working for college. The stress and pressure will drive you insane. I didn’t even start thinking about college until summer before senior year, and it didn’t end up being so bad for me. As cheesy as it sounds, you’ll get wherever you need to be. Enjoy the ride.

Good luck!

Wow, thanks so much. That means a lot coming from someone accepted to Brown.

I agree, I feel like I am WAY to early in thinking about college and stuff. I should be worrying about my exams in two weeks rather than what I am gonna write my application essay about senior year. I have a tendency to stress about things way ahead in the future, I am working on it haha. I am just SUPER attracted to Brown’s environment, student groups, curriculum, etc. Thanks again!
