thanks for viewing the post. am i correct in saying my profile is competitive and what makes the difference is the essay and any hooks ?

Sounds VERY good (though I am a mere high school student trembling in the shadow of your academic credentials).

While some of those ECs are, no offense, the “generic spectacular” (Varsity, Model UN, etc.), the fact that the Department of Defense thought your project was important enough to fund is definitely what will make admissions counselors sit up and notice. I’ll admit, I don’t know what you researched, but, again, that you had the tenacity, potential, and academic interest in subjects important enough to secure government funding will definitely put you ahead of the pack.

Again, though, speak to your college counselor if you have one, or at least your school counselor, maybe an admissions rep if you’re feeling that insecure.

In a nutshell: it’s likely, but seek professional advice.

Have you considered Caltech? You have a strong research background, and they have a strong research culture there.

Anyways, hard to give you an accurate chance for these schools without considering your ethnicity, gender, state, etc.
I would say that if you done a great job with your research (published papers and good recs). Then you have a chance at top schools.

P.S
Make sure you spell Stanford correctly on your application

Rankings are not a very reliable way to pick a school. You need to pick schools based on what you and your parents can afford. Private schools vary widely on how much financial aid they give. The ones that offer the most aid are so hyper-competitive, no one has a halfway realistic chance of getting in. There are hyper-competitive schools that are STILL stingy with financial aid. Out of state publics are widely known for being stingy to nonresidents. What I would do is scrap the rankings list and pick some affordable schools based on a good match for you.

Thanks for all your feedback. Right, it’s very true that it’s harder to say since the whole process so differs from one university to other.

Update:
I got 1590 in the latest SAT which takes SAT out of equation guess
