what are my chances?

nobody could really tell about chances, but anyway...
TOEFL--110
sat resoning: critical 530, writing 530 (yes, they suck) math 650

Sat SUbjects: math level 1--690 math level 2--740

GPA-4.0

I am a painter, pianist, winner of art competitions, I had a national award for outstanding grades, I was in top 1% of my graduation class. I became the winner of Future leaders exchange program, got scholarship from US STATE DEP. to spend post grad. year in american high school,my curent grades in all subjects here are A or A+. and I took national exams in my homecountry. my nationalwide rank now is 17th place.
I am applying for:

Brown university
Swarthmore
Macalester
Dartmouth
RISd
Upenn
haverford

I know all of them are TOP but I have my match-safetys in my homeountry so I don't have to worry. I don't want normal but not AWESOME US colleges like DREXEl and UMASS. I refused the VIP app of drexel and I DON"T LIKE umass which I was thinking of as safety.

EVALUATE MY CHANCES, PLEASE.

SOrry if there are misspellings my keyboard sucks:)

Your chances are probably close to nil at Brown, Penn, Dartmouth and Swarthmore due to your low SAT scores.

you probably mean my SAt reasoning . I do agree they are low. but my SAT subjects are very high. LEV 1 is better than 85% level 2 better than 92%. I applied anyway. "thank you" for discouraging me:)))) and merry christmas!!!!!!!

Hey - you asked for chances, and you got them.

And your SAT Subject Tests are not high - they are in the range of the colleges you are applying to (but why 2x math and not another subject?), but they don't get you in.

Your chances are slim, but who knows? Apply. You're probably not instantly disqualified, so give it a shot. But make sure you have a couple of safeties to fall back on.

Merry Christmas!

Anuka and vtree are one? :-?

How can you manage such an awesome TOEFL? Please share some tips with me, an international student applying from Viet Nam, OK? I got 560 on CR, 740 on Math (SAT) but only a lame 90 on TOEFL? :(( Thanks a lotttttt

Your SAT II scores are not by any means "high" in the context of the applicant pool at Brown, Penn, Dartmouth and Swarthmore - average at best.

"Anuka and vtree are one? :-?" what does this mean? who is vtree?:)))
I don't need safety school in the US. I am accepted by good European schools of managment:)) and I am just having one year academic vacation, which I am spending in the Us as a scholar of future leaders exchange program ( financed by dep. of state):))) so I just tried applying to colleges. thank you guys for sharing your opinions it as very nice of you.

about TOEFL...well, i was not preparing for it at all, I have been studying in US high school as post grad, since september and maybe this helped me a bit, but I didn't take prep. course or anything like that, the day before the test i bought that online practice test, which expires after you are done( and it sucks because you don't have a chance to try again) Conditions in my testing center was below the averge, i have never ever seen such a horrible testing center in my life. it was a real ghetto. I don't kknow what advise i might give you.
practice listening-- it is very easy and you shouldn't loose points.
don't be in a rush in reading section. you have much time so read carefully.
speaking--remember toefl i checking the knowleddge of engish not logic or your ideas so say what you really think.
writing--long doesn't always mean good. try to write logical, well organized essay.
but even if you are bright you should find a normal testing center, one that is suitable for human beings. I still have no idea how I managed to do my test while traffic noise was driving me crazy, guy next to me was doing speaking and I could hear all words he was saying. their headsets are the cheapest and the worst in the world, no, in the whole universe.
I think 90 is a good score, you can probaby do better if you retake it. if you wirte the scores you got for each section i will be able to give you better advise. the book that my friends usually find helpful is toefl ibt prep. guide longman addition.

Why did you ask for chances anyway? Should I contact you if my schools needs a counselor or a TOEFL consultant or a Leader-of-snobs ?? Get a life!! Oh and for the record, your 'Engleez' sucks ... :)

sorri but it'll be a long shot to get into Dartmouth with the critial n writing... ever think about retaking

dear "advirit" I really couldn't understand the reason of your sarcasm and "anger." if you think that my "TOEFL advises" were just "show off" you're wrong. it was just a respond to the question of "nguyenminhhieuh" I kind of regret that I decided to ask people for advise or for evaluating my chances, but that's ok. before critisizing other people's knowledge of English check your knowledge of grammer "schools needs" might not be correct, right? my knowledge of English is cheked by more respected people and organizations, thanks for writing the conclusion but i dont think your ideas are considered by colleges. sorry for sarcasm maybe I went too far. chill out,

If i were snob i would not write anything on discussion board and would not let others write rude comments:)

yes I will retake but next year:)) I have taken SAT for the first time, I even have not heard about it before. We don't have SAT as a college entrance requirenment in Europe:(probably I will try to transfer next year. one can always improve test scores. it is pretty good that at least my common app and essays are done:)

look at the positive side.
it's not bad score for average Mongolian kid... there are hundreds of low scored mongolian kids applying for top schools... a few of them hits target...

anuka its good that ur retaking.. read some SAT prep books they help!

@anuka: Thanks very much for your advice. And as you suggest, I'll post my individual section's score as follows:

Reading - 26 (Now, due to some of my knowledge of the SAT Critical Reading and SAT vocabulary, I believe I can manage a 28 on TOEFL Reading)

Listening - 22 (I find this section never easy to master at all :( . Usually I ace all the conversation questions but lose points at lecture questions, particularly those questions that are worth more than 1 point. Any recommendation?)

Speaking - 20. I find this section the MOST difficult.

Writing - 22. Independent 4-5 (GOOD), Integrated 2.5-3.5 (FAIR).

Again, thanks you guy ;)

Btw, how do you take notes during lectures? What do your notes look like?

I don't take too many notes. I just write down the dates (if there is any). I would like to suggest you not to take too many notes and not to write down the whole conversation, try to understand what the lecture is about. Usually all the quesions based on lectures ask you to summarize, they are not so specific. I don't know if it works for you but you should try. taking notes are good but you might get distracted by writing and it is hard to listen and write simultainously. when it's time to answer the questions it is also hard to look over the notes, because you have just couple of seconds to answer. I am not an expert of TOEFL, I am just telling about my experience. I will be happy if it helps you to improve your TOEFL score:)

nguyenminhhieuh, speaking section is difficult for all international students. Is English primary language for instructions at your high school? or are you taking private lessons in English? if you have friends who have been studying in the US it will be helpful to talk with them in English. Try to watch movies in English to make your pronounciation better and more understandable. I know it is really weird when you are asked strange questions and than you have to "talk with computer" most people like 'face-to-face' conversation. Listening was very uncomfortable for me.
you should be able to improve listening after you practice for several weeks. In integrated writing try not to repeat the sentences that are in the given text. In reading just don't hurry and be more concentrated on 3 point questions.

GOOD LUCK!

yea anuka, i'm not much of a pro myself, but if you were to talk to my high school counselor ( she sucks though!!!) she would advice yout to take out some of those schools since they are all reach for anyone ( maybe except lafayette). Once you are certain ou have safe schools elsewhere, then i do not see any harm in applying. I remember one of my scholl mates from three years back who got into stanford with 1860 on SATs ( he had one hell of a stellar transcript though). Who knows, something about you could stand out and you could be picked. we all have our fingers crossed in this process. Just be certain you have some safeties.

You have terrible SATs, decent GPA, great ECs and a list which contains the very best colleges you can apply to.

I suggest have safeties if you apply before retaking SAT. Try boosting you Math and CR scores.

And please, let me tell you that no one gives a **** if you have a 105 or a 110 or a 115 on the toefl. The very fact that you have a score above a 100 is enough for most of the schools.
