I am interested in UNC, UPenn, and Bryn Mawr.. I like UNC especially. I have a gpa of about a 4.3, my sat score is a 2100, and I created a club at school, volunteer, work at a library, and am a member of the NHS. I am also in 3 APs this year, and will be in 5 next year. I haven't taken the ap tests yet, so I don't know my scores. I am a member of 2 charity organizations, and have designed websites for both. I volunteer at a radio station and have some on air time as well, I am also going to be volunteering at a local hospital this summer, as well as the county Republican Committee. I was a peer leader this year and also in girl scouts since kindergarten. I am not a legacy, so that might be a hindrance. Also, what sat subject tests would you recommend? I don't want any math. I am thinking about the Literature one since I'm taking APLAC this year, and consider myself an "English person." AP US history is a two year course.... so i only have half the info as of now, would it be good to just check a textbook out this summer, study like crazy, and take it in Oct?? Thanks for your input, I appreciate it.
(I'm not majoring in any science or applying to any special programs either. ) I should also mention, Medusa National Mythology Exam Corona Laureate freshman year, and Bronze sophomore year. I was in the Deis Committee on my school's Model UN. What other leadership activities would you recommend? If I join like a big brothers/big sisters program next year would it be too late? I was planning on joining it this year but it didn't work out. Also, I am a chief editor of my school's online paper this year. I guess Latin Honor Society too, if that means anything.

not good: sat is way too low and your extra curricular is severely lacking

you are out of state, so I really don’t know. In state it would be a shoe-in

I honestly don’t see how it’s lacking ec’s, maybe I need to elaborate. . School paper, chief editor of online paper, Peer Leader, Church Organization (GOYA), member of 2 Greek Charities, radio volunteer and host, volunteer at food pantry, a community outreach program, girl scouts, volunteer at Republican Committee and Hospital, Model UN, plus Book Club, Poetry Club, and Community Club.

Don’t pay attention to those trying to bring you down.

Your ECs are fine but you need to make sure that it doesn’t look like a laundry list designed for resume building. Make sure that within that list there several things that you really have some passion about. it’s not about quantity of ECs…much more about quality and passion.

What is your UW GPA? Class rank? These are two things that UNC pays a lot of attention to.

If you look at the profiles of this year’s accepted students you can see that the SAT scores have definitely gone up. UNC appears to focus more on the old scoring system (1600) with not as much emphasis on the Writing. How do your other two scores measure up? I can’t tell you how competitive you really are without seeing the old score breakdown.

Remember that UNC also places great value on essays; make sure when the time comes that you spend a great deal of time on them and make them stand out…they are your only chance to humanize yourself and the only way they can get a glimpse of who the person is behind the numbers.

Admission is all about diversity. Stats of admitted applicants vary by diversity group. So if you’re OOS which I presume you are, then the questions would be: “What race are you?” and “What state are you from?” If you’re from Montana/North Dakota, you will be competing against a much smaller pool of applicants than folks from Virginia, Pennsylvania, etc.

Thanks. I’m in NY. I don’t know my unweighted gpa, but I know I have at least an A- , probably an A average letter wise, (even in AP/honors classes) so that would be, what, like a 3.8ish at least? But I don’t know. As for class rank, I don’t know what number I am but I am definitely in the top 15%, my school is well known for great academics and a strong student pool. As for SAT breakdown: 690 on math, 710 on CR. I am working on bringing them up. I appreciate the feedback, thanks!

Your scores are at the high end of the middle 50% for UNC. You can find these ranges easily at the college board website. Although they look at many many factors besides test scores, it helps to know where your scores fall in relation to recently accepted students.
