hi i was just wondering what my odds are of getting into columbia in the fall
sat: 1550
subject tests:
770 math II
750 chem
800 bio
gpa: 3.9 weighted
high school difficulty: extremely hard, top ranked
extracurriculars: major science research for 8 weeks each summer
president of school newspaper, volunteering at a hospital, volunteering at a nursing home, started a foundation and partnered with other organizations (major time commitment)
Columbia’s acceptance rate is 6%. Your stats are there but it’s still super, super competitive. Have matches and safeties.
Unless you are a legacy-applicant or a super super super good athlete… it’s still 6% for everyone. No matter how good your scores are, they admit whoever they want.
However, your scores look extremely good. And especially your GPA, considering you went to an extremely hard high school. Just make a good college essay and I say you have a really good chance.
would it help if i applied ED
Yes. Columbia’s ED admissions rate is substantially higher. It is binding early decision though so be 100% sure they are your top choice.
I would advise you to do more things with your time, partaking in the arts, seeing shows or interesting speakers (if possible), going to museums, etc. Columbia is very interested in one’s cultural participation as well. The Core Curriculum views being well rounded as important.
eta I don’t mean you aren’t doing productive things already, I just mean make sure you have things to say about yourself that aren’t just factoids about what time you spent where, but more about you, as a person and how multiple facets of culture are part of your life. This is just based on my perspective of the application this past year and things my daughter had to address (beyond the common app questions-which will be the same for next year). If you can log in now, go ahead and take a look so you can start thinking about what to write. Columbia is basically a crapshoot, to be honest, when it comes to grades/ECs/stats. Everyone is the best of the best. You’ve got to stand out, and the way you write about yourself and how you craft that narrative is most important in a sea where everyone is mostly the same at first glance.
