My son has a 3.8 weighted GPA with a 29 ACT. SAT 2C Math score is 740 and SAT2 Chemistry score of 720 with decent ECS. What are his chances at Cornell, Northwestern, Georgia Tech, RPI, UIUC, Vandy, Purdue,. He really wants to go to NW.

Need a bit more info on extracurriculars, URM status, which state you live in, what his major is and SAT IIs to give you a real good chances estimate, but here's my best based upon info given:

Northwestern--Reach unless ACT improves to about a 31
Cornell--Reach as a business, architecture, or science major, Slight Reach otherwise
Vanderbilt--Same as Northwestern
Georgia Tech--Slight Reach if not in-state and an engineering major, otherwise Match
RPI--Safe Match to Match
UIUC--Match
Purdue--Safe Match

We live in Connecticut. His planned major is engineering. He has 3 years of track , performs in the Jazz band in School, He is the treasurer of Key club(which allowed him to volunteer for about 100 hrs), He is a member of the Science bowl team and participated in the Chemistry olympaid and got a certificate out of it.He is the section leader in the orchestra where he plays the violin, and has also won a few piano competetions. His SAT II Math2c score is 740 and SAT II Chemistry score is 720. He is planning to take SAT II history in June. He has had a very challenging high school curriculum with 4 AP courses so far and 3 more in Senior year.

What's his unweighted GPA? I think Calcruzer's estimates are about right, although perhaps a bit optimistic. I think Cornell, Northwestern, and Vanderbilt are probably high reaches.

I don't know about the unweighted GPA . How about Univ of Rochester, Lehigh, univ of Wisconson(Madison), Univ of Michigan. Thanks in advance

The problem is that it's difficult to know what a weighted 3.8 means. In many schools, that could represent a transcript with all Bs, or even all Bs and several Cs. Even if weighted, grades like that would be problematic at several of the schools on the list.

I think the GPA and the ACT score is a bit low for the likes of Northwestern, Vanderbilt and Cornell, but they are definitely still worth a shot. I think your son will get in to Georgia Tech and Purdue.

I got intovandy with slightly better stats and from ct. I turned them down for duke though. Also if I were him I would do what I did and apply to purdue in august. I knew that I was in before school even started and it took slot of pressure off. I also gotalot of money from them and I do not need fa aid and did not apply for any. Also got into the honors program. As with all rolling schools your chances are ALOT better the earlier you apply.
