What are people's reaction when you say you got into/go to uc berkeley?

oh sigh. no one ever cares at my school since we have a lot of overachieving students. last year, at least 60 people went to Cal. =/.

Amongst the top 30 students in my school, many of whom I am very well acquainted with, it just got a smile and a congrats. My calculus teacher pinched the cheeks of everyone who got in. From my less accomplished friends, it was pretty impressive and they kept bugging me about whether I will go there or not. Oddly enough, getting into Georgetown got me a lot more astonished faces - people said “no way” sincerely (including my english teacher).

@ao1313 : it is awesome isn’t it haha  yea I kinda wanna tell UT to suck it… because that top 10% rule stressed me out wayyy to much… I do live in austin, Texas and go to a very competitive HS. the kids at my school were really surprised and i feel like i got congratulated a little too much haha, but probably because they all knew UT rejected me so it WAS a surprise.

Will you be goin to Cal? I want to go so badly but im worried about the high cost… gonna wait last minute before i click the accept button.

its nice to meet someone from TX :)

A lot of people from my school got into both UCLA and Cal (around 20-30 for each), but I think the reason I get congratulated a lot is because people can’t believe I got in, especially compared to some of the other people that didn’t get in. It sorta still hasn’t been made clear to me how I got in, like I don’t understand.

Out of state must be different. Im out of state so i got a lot of congratulatory comments. Im sure everyone in instate gets in with like 1800 SAT, so to in state it might not matter.

lol at my school like 60 kids got into Berkeley, 60 kids into UCLA (there’s lots of overlap)…it’s impressive, but most ppl are like “ANY IVIES???”

@dae0528 : Haha yeah I got into UT because of the top 10% rule which I think is the dumbest rule ever created since people who deserved to get in got CAPed! Well Im gonna visit Berkeley in like 2 weeks and Im also gonna visit UCLA. I agree, its so expensive out of state!! especially because theyre economy is screwed up. Im probably gonna go to Cal since I think its the best choice right now. Do you have other schools youre considering? and yea its nice to know someone from Texas too! Im from Houston

easyasabc: for the most part, you still need to get higher than an 1800 to get accepted. Being in-state gives you a boost, but not that much of a boost.

A guy at my school ranked 7th in a class of 700 was rejected. His SAT was in the 1800 range, but he was still a nationally ranked soccer player with a 4.3+ gpa.

My korean grandfather was more impressed about Berkeley than Columbia. Berkeley is a huge deal in Asia. My dad personally ranked Harvard, Stanford and Berkeley as the top (in order) from his foreign perspective. He was happy that I got into Cal and gave me his personal opinion to choose Cal over Columbia. I’m an international student so getting admitted to Cal was just as great as getting into Columbia.

I’m international but did some schooling in CA. The CA public HS I graduated from is very competitive and is a feeder to Cal & UCLA. Around 50 out of 700 graduating seniors get into Cal every year. Quite a few get into Ivies/top colleges. Don’t know how relevant it is to say this at Cal’s CC board, but 14 students from the Class of 2012 were accepted to Stanford, more than any CA HS. I guess 2008 admissions were quite great for my HS.

Getting into Cal from my HS is impressive as most of who get admitted are smart and in top rank. Some of the stand out students get into the Ivies and many get into top 10 colleges. The Class of 2012 had 50 valedictorians (I presume these 50 students got perfect unweighted 4.0’s and 5.0’s weighted). My class (of 2013) had 25 valedictorians. Kind of silly, though. What’s the point of ranking students where there are so many of them with the same academic record.

@easyasabc: If everyone with an 1800 got in, do you think Berkeley would still be a top university?

Since I’m CoE and international people that knew about Cal and that it was my first choice really congratulated me and hugged me. My father and I hugged so happily that I mildly bruised his lip. And we didn’t notice until 2 hours later and I was also red all over because of the exitement. lol I have in my computer screen saver Cal - Class of 2014 and in my ipod a golden bear logo. GO BEARS!

@strive: I feel the exact same way. I couldn’t believe I got into Cal, especially after having been rejected from UCLA. I ran out of my room screaming, like somebody had died or something. My school has the same situation, but, like you, people have also been congratulating me. I was going to tour a lot of schools during my spring break, but everyone was telling me how crazy that was when I have Cal to go to. So, I will most likely be attending UCB this fall!
