hey, i'm applying to boarding school, and i was wondering if there were any boarding schools with exceptally beautiful campuses. i have always been interested in artitecture, and location is also a factor. it can be either a coed or all girls school. any thoughts? I thought st. george's and emma willard's campuses were nice...

St. Paul's School in Concord has an amazing campus. It lacated in the middle of the woods. There are many ponds lakes and rivers and its filled with beautiful gothic archtecture. :]

Here is a thread on the most beautiful campus + academics: http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/showthread.php?t=216547&highlight=beautiful+campus

thanks you two! anyone else? artitecture is my passion!

Choate has an amazing campus.

"In 1992, Blair Academy was entered on to the National Register of Historic Places in recognition of its historic and architectural significance."

I think Lawrenceville is also on the National Register of Historic Places.

My favorite campuses, not in order:

a) St. George's
b) Lawrenceville
c) Exeter
d) Middlesex
e) St. Paul's

Of course, I'm drawing from a limited list. I've never been on the Choate campus. I wouldn't have thought it would be ranked high from other comments. Now I'm curious. Mercersburg has gotten rave reviews and I haven't been there, but the area is lovely. Nobody ever really mentions the Hill School...another school I haven't been too. And St. Andrew's in Delaware is where Dead Poet's Society was filmed...and that campus looks wonderful in the movie. Last time I was at Blair I was playing football and that wasn't recent.

Exeter may require an explanation...but there's something neat about it sort of bleeding into the town that I find appealing.

Middlesex reminds me of the Town of Popperville in the children's book, "Mike Mulligan and the Steam Shovel." Walking around campus I half expected to see Mrs. McGillicuddy come out with her gray hair in a bun and Henry B. Swap to greet me and give me the key to Middlesex or something.

I like Lawrenceville's layout. It's a large campus though. Middlesex is a more manageable size...but for you whippersnappers who take 3 strides for each one I take, Lawrenceville might be just the right size.

St. George's seascape and St. Paul's bucolic setting (yet at the edge of the state capital) are well documented.

St. George's (and Tabor).. Thacher is very small and surrounded by citrus groves, green pastures and Spanish mission architecture.. very nice.

Based on pictures that I've seen, I'd say that the best campuses are: (in no particular order)

St. Paul's
Middlesex
Andover
Tabor
St. George's
Cate

i was just about to say cate too, it is truly gorgeous, it overlooks the pacific ocean and has great weather all year long

Judging from the seven school campuses that I've been to, I think that St. Paul's and Exeter's are the more gorgeous ones. Well thats my opinion.

yeah, Blair Academy was recently registered as a historical landmark (http://blairsociety.org/blplace.htm)... Blair Academy is very beautiful (http://www.epodunk.com/cgi-bin/genInfo.php?locIndex=18721 http://www.lobsterlu.com/images/njpc/370603.jpg http://www.buntingandlyon.com/detail.asp?id=657&search=)...Locke Hall looks like a to backdrop to a movie set.. and the Dean's Hall as well. My mother said, "Just a very classy place. Very nice and traditional... and so peaceful."

I think
-Cate----ocean
-Thacher----mountians?? and horses
-Deerfield----its just pretty. i think theres a really preppy feel to it.
idk thats just what I felt
-St. Paul's----It reminds me of Harry Potter. Its really beautiful, especially the library with the view of the lake.
-Lawrenceville----it feels [im emphasizing FEELS] like a boarding school. ;)

Exeter:
to me, everything seemed professionally setup. Like when i visited, I felt that it was everything was new and professional. The buildings are a reddish color...i think and everything is so neat and tidy and professional.
i just really liked it. :)

Have you guys been to Cate? It's really not that nice. I have, and I thought we landed at a summer camp when i first got there.. It seemed awkward and unrefined and ... just, bad.. in poor taste.

The one picture that graces the website and the brochures is just one little place.. the rest of the school doesn't look like it at all, really..

Lawrenceville has a great campus. agree with shikashakegirl, it has the boarding school feel to it.

Cranbrook Kingswood...tons of art and architecture...flower gardens(40 acres), museum, science center....you have to visit it...

St. Pauls...beautiful

Thank you all! I'll check the boarding schools mentioned above out.

Nobody has mentioned Loomis -Chaffee.

I was just there on Easter Sunday and the quad is spectacular with the tall trees lining the sides, the Georgian architecture, Founders Hall at one end, dining hall at the other, dorms along the sides of the quad. When I graduated, those trees were saplings!

I have never been to UVA, but I am told that the Loomis Quad is very similar to UVA.

Choate, IMO leaves a lot to be desired. Taft is lovely. Salisbury is quintessential New England, Kent is very attractive. Deerfield, if you like New England has an awesome setting. And the setting of St. Georges can't be topped for -- on the water in Newport?

wow! props to cranbrook.

johnathon - if you're reading, look into cranbrook some more! it's perfect for you.. w/ the proximity and everything. wow.. i'm impressed.

I will put in my two cents for NMH as I always do! True, the architecture isn't as beautiful as some of the older schools (although I think the dining hall is impressive), but the campus itself is gorgeous. It is located on a hill overlooking the Connecticut River Valley. Beautiful setting with over a thousand acres. The little "cottage" dormitories above the football field are also interesting and the chapel is very nice with a stunning rose window. St. Paul's is also gorgeous. To whoever said it was "Harry Potter-ish"; I agree! Exeter has some nice buildings, but I don't care much for the way the campus sort of "blends" into the town of Exeter.
