Yes, I specifically said that I graduated from an NC high school, although I attend college in Pennsylvania. My anecdotal evidence is contrary to yours, but it’s, of course, case specific to each high school and its senior class.

MIT / Caltech

the two kids i know who were cross-admitted opted for caltech, but i’m not sure i would have done the same.

I chose CMU over Rice/Cornell

Duke/Rice
Rice/WashU
WashU/Northwestern
Rice/Cornell

I personally know lots of Dartmouth vs. Duke and Dartmouth vs. Brown.

Evidently, there are many Georgetown vs. UVA and several Georgetown vs. Duke. I think G’town comes out ahead of UVA and is about even against Duke.

UNC - Duke

Interesting NC theory… Heres what I’ve found

Instate I have found that if money is no issue people choose Duke because instate UNC is easier to get into so Duke is more prestigious. Out of state people choose UNC because it’s less expensive and about as impressive (except in NC). So like a lot of decisions made on prestige it comes down to money.

I would not go as far as saying that. From my own perception as an out-of-stater, Duke seems to definitely be perceived as a lot more prestigious than UNC. Then again that’s prestige, which, IMO does not reflect the true qualitative difference between the education of both school’s.

Berkeley and UCLA have many crossadmits and Berkeley almost always wins.

I personally would like to know HYPSM vs Wharton

Northwestern vs UChicago
WUSTL vs Northwestern

I’m curious about the numbers for Stanford vs Harvard, Stanford vs Princeton, and Stanford vs Yale. I’m fairly confident that Stanford beats Princeton and Yale, but I’m sure that Harvard wins the cross-admit battle with Stanford. I’d just like to see some figures.

Oh, and back to the UNC/Duke discussion, three kids from my school got into UNC and Duke. Two chose UNC, while the other chose neither (she chose Northwestern). One girl chose UNC because they were giving her great finaid (basically a full-ride), while the other girl just chose UNC because she liked it better. I also know another kid who was rejected by UNC but who got into Duke and is planning on going there. Weird.

in PennWorld I’ve seen a good deal of

Penn vs Brown
Penn vs Stanford
Penn vs Columbia (probably the only immediately logical comparison of the three ;))

Brown vs Yale
Brown vs Dartmouth
Amherst vs Williams
Northwestern vs WashU

In recent years, Harvard has attracted more than two-thirds of joint admits to Stanford.

Princeton’s own statistics reveal that, starting in 1982, the majority of students admitted to both Princeton and Stanford chose to attend the latter, with the proportion rising to nearly 2 in 3 by 1990.

As the YAM reported, Yale has recently “begun to lose more Stanford common admits than it wins.”

Can you give us some rough idea of the usual cross-admit breakdown with Caltech? A fellow from there, relying on the “Revealed Preference” study, says Caltech gets 56% of the cross admits.

Posted by: Phil on March 15, 2006 03:14 PM

Phil, going by last year’s mutual admits, it’s about 19% to Caltech, 64% to MIT, and 17% to a different college altogether. The response rate to our study was 92% (1390 of 1508 admits responding) so it should be fairly accurate.

Columbia vs. Penn comes up A LOT… naturally, since they are the two cool, urban ivies.

wonder who won the cross admit battle this year…

For the majority of students at my high school, I have to agree with these sentiments as well. I go to school in Raleigh.

In PA. many students find themselves choosing between UPitt Honors/Penn State Schreyer/one or more “top 20” schools.
