What are some reach non-ED schools for me?

Hi guys,

I am currently going to ED NYU Stern School of Business which I think I might be able to get into, but in case I don't get into that OR NYU (you can check a box that says they'll put you in regular NYU if you don't qualify for Stern)... I want to apply to 1-3 reach schools.

Currently, I am also applying to Lehigh, Penn State, and Brandeis which are all around NYU's range. Just for a little background.

I am looking to major in luxury marketing or PR but concentrated in the fashion field, so nothing in the middle of nowhere, no liberal art schools either please.
I am looking at:
Emory
UChicago (yes this is a high reach)

...but where else should I apply to?? I really enjoy a city-like environment as well, which is why I am applying NYU. Also I'm not limited financially but I'd like to stay on the east coast if possible so I'm not considering UCal-Berkeley or USC or Rice, etc...

GPA:
3.9/4.5 weighted, 3.56 unweighted, our school GPA is very weird (I mostly got Bs and B+s, no C+s and few As. We don't have A+s)
2120 SAT 2nd try
790 Math 2 SAT2
Freshman/Sophomore: all honors/AP except I'm wasn't in AP english, just honors english
Junior Year: took these AP classes and got these scores: 5 on AB Calc, 4 on Micro and Macroeconomics, 3 on APUSH
Senior Year: taking 4 APs Physics, Euro, Stat, and French, honors English

A ton of extra curriculars, most notably:
-president of FBLA (business club)
-captain of a small school business NJ competition team (we won county champs last year)
-2 internships (one was very short) in NYC last summer (between junior and senior yr) in social media/marketing/PR... my main internship at a startup company ended very well because after it ended, the startup got bought by a bigger company
-many many state level piano competitions, played at carnegie hall 2x
-7 years in boy scouts, did bunch of community service, also in costa rica and bahamas (not going for eagle scout)
-letter of recommendation from a NYU Professor
-a lot more smaller ECs, but not going to list for the time being

NYU itself may be a case study in luxury marketing (expensive with a reputation of poor financial aid, but somehow the dream school of many students who take out big loans to attend).

@ucbalumnus

I don’t need to worry about aid, is UPenn a good pick as a reach, if I’m not EDing?

It is hard to see someone not getting into NYU but getting into Penn.

That’s true haha. Idk… do you think I’m good for NYU Stern though?

For your intended major (luxury marketing or PR but concentrated in the fashion field), UChicago is not a very appropriate choice. It does not offer an undergraduate business major. Also, the Hyde Park neighborhood is a very different urban setting from Greenwich Village. It’s unlikely, too, that if you are rejected by NYU/ED you’d be accepted at Chicago.

Take a look at Babson. Excellent entrepreneur ratings and close proximity to Boston.o

I agree with voyager that Babson is a great option for a student with your career interests.

Perhaps Boston College (Carroll) or Carnegie Mellon (Tepper) as well. And it might be worth taking a look at Cornell (Dyson) although it is not in a city, the college itself is large.

@happy1 thanks! I will take a look at CMU Tepper. How much more difficult is it to get into than say regular CMU? Or is it a program rather than a seperate school? And I’m looking into Cornell as well

bump? Thinking about UPenn Wharton but it looks like a high reach.

Georgetown, UMich, Northwestern, Georgia Tech

@teenbodybuilder

I can get into Georgetown with my GPA? Is it my ECs?

It’s exactly what you asked for - a reach. I mean there’s always a chance. A 3.56 doesn’t stand out but it’s respectable.

ohh thank you!! what do you think about my ED to NYU Stern? I don’t want the hassle of applying to a ton if I get in

You’re one of the few people for whom I would say NYU is a perfect fit (and almost the only one for what you want to do). You can afford it, and you will likely get in. To go into luxury marketing, being in New York will give you a huge advantage in finding internships (at PR agencies, retail companies) and having your finger on the pulse of the fashion industry.

Still probably a reach. Stern’s average SAT is a 1450 and unweighted GPA is a 3.75. ED must help some but it’s hard to get into.

@teenbodybuilder

Thanks for the input! I know my SAT and GPA are a tad low, but I’m writing an essay on how passionate I am for NYC and also for the fashion industry , in which NYC would be the heart of it. Also, I’m getting a Letter of Rec from a NYU professor who I interned for. If it is still a reach, I’m going to take my chances.

@sally305 thanks! yes, NYU is truly my dream school :)
