I would like to know of any scholarships that I could possibly apply to my Junior year of HS? The only one have heard about is the Nordstrum Scholarship and I would like to gather more information in order to start saving up/preparing for college.
Most scholarships are for students who have completed their junior year because then the scholarship folks see three years of HS achievement not just two.
Have you taken the SAT or ACT yet? My kids had some scholarships that required those too…and they didn’t take them until the end of their junior year in HS.
I’d be interested in learning about scholarships that have application deadlines in the Junior year. I know National Merit is based on the PSAT in 11th grade but I vaguely recall some schools have scholarships that you have to nominated by your high school in 11th grade but can’t remember which ones.
My S18’s has taken the SAT and two SAT 2 (physics and Math 2).
The Hispanic Heritage Youth Award is applied to at the end of junior year now. My children received scholarships during high school for attending their summer programs (competitive applications). They also received monies from universities for visiting them during special visit programs. The Hamilton Program is applied to in junior year (I think Dec. or Jan) for low-income students, The Jack Kent Cooke Foundation has a scholarship for 8th graders (that is when you apply) that provides support during high school. It paid for laptops, transportation and tuition costs at summer programs as well as the scholars events One of my students received it and used it throughout high school. The same student then received the JKC scholarship for college. The National Center for Women In Information Technology (NCWIT and I may have the wrong name) has an award program that you can apply to at any time in high school. If you are selected as a national winner (there are about 32 of them) you will receive a $500 award (plus other great things) and one of the judges also gave the winners a $1K scholarship. My DD was a national runner-up and a regional winner and received some local awards because of it. Marvel in conjunction with their movies sometimes has a “girls in stem” contest and my DD’s friend was selected for it as a sophomore and won a $1k scholarship because of it. The Congressional Hispanic Caucus has a listing of scholarships and I believe there are some junior ones lists.
Most private scholarships are for rising seniors, however you are smart to be thinking of it now since some applications open in August before senior year and continue having deadlines through a student’s senior year. The pre-senior year are not a lot and very unique in nature in terms of who can apply. Look locally for scholarships too. My DD does the research to come up with a list of private scholarships where she thinks she has a decent chance at getting the scholarship and then organizes her applications to see where she can reuse essays and/or recommendations. She lists everything needed to apply on a chart and stays on top of due dates, etc. I would recommend you do the same thing too.
Also determine your EFC to see if receiving private scholarships will have a negative impact on your financial aid from a college such as reducing your aid from the college or whether it will reduce loans.
As others have mentioned, most outside scholarships are for high school seniors and high school seniors only – not younger students, not older.
Carson, Hamilton, QuestBridge College Prep, and Coolidge are the ones that come to mind. Most take financial need into consideration (QB significantly so).
