What are some schools that would be a good fit for me?

I'm an upcoming senior, interested in Environmental Science or possibly Forestry, something along those lines. I have an unweighted 4.0 gpa, a 2030 SAT, a 31 ACT, I'm ranked 19 out of 300-something (as of last spring), and I have a decent amount of extracurricular activities. I get pretty good grades, but I'm not interested in going to a super competitive or prestigious college. I just want a college that has a strong science department, isn't too big (under 10,000 undergrads, preferably), and has a good number of activities and a nice general atmosphere. I'm also a resident of NY, so if I could get lower in-state tuition rates that'd be great, but I'm not limiting myself to only schools in NY.

What are some target schools for a student like me? I want to apply early, but I don't even know what schools I should be looking at yet.

I know that SUNY has a well-regarded college of Environmental Science and Forestry, so definitely check that out–your scores make you an excellent candidate, I think.

EDIT: Looking around on some old CC threads, it seems that SUNY ES&F shares a campus with Syracuse U, as well as dorms.

There’s also SUNY Plattsburgh, which seems to have a lot of areas of study for Enviro. Sci.

EDIT II: College of the Atlantic might be a good fit as well.

And though you say you aren’t interest in a prestigious school, you should def. check out Cornell for their Natural Resource Mgmt. program and Environmental Studies at Middlebury College.

I actually visited SUNY ESF recently (And SU, because it was right there) and I liked it a lot, but my parents seemed less than impressed (I think that was partially just because they were comparing it to Syracuse, which is beautiful, but not for me). But I’ll probably apply there anyway. I didn’t realize Plattsburgh had Enviromental Science, but it does, so I’ll look into that, as well as the other two you mentioned. Thanks!

What kind of career do you hope to enter with an environmental science or forestry degree? What income might that entail? Keep cost in mind with your search.

I don’t know how these jobs pay, but perhaps a forestry or wildlife technician, or I might go for a slightly different major and do urban planning, or work for a company that monitors air or water quality in cities, or manage natural resource use, that sort of thing. I am keeping cost in mind; I’d honestly rather go out of state, but I realize in-state schools may be cheaper. I’m trying to limit myself to schools under $25,000 a year, and even then I probably wouldn’t go to a certain college if they offered me no financial assistance whatsoever.

Any other suggestions? (bump)
