I know that sounds like a ridiculous question to ask about a school with such a huge student body, but the rumors are that everyone is really artsy/hipster. I realize there is a huge gay population, and that is something I don't mind at all, I am a straight guy but gay people are cool with me. But are there kids who like comedy movies over art shows and burger joints over coffee shops? I have an open mind and would do those things, but from what I hear about kids at NYU I don't know if I will fit in, but I really don't want to pass up being in NYC or studying at NYU for a superficial reason like this, but I could really use some reassurance, preferably from students at NYU already. Thanks for the help.

NYU is a HUGE school. There is a large hispter/gay population, but being such a large school there are plenty of different types of people. There are plenty of people who prefer comedy movies to art shows, burger joints over coffee shops. I find that almost anyone will fit in at NYU as long as they can adapt to NYU’s particular type of campus life.

i live in ny, and i can say that there a lot of hipsters at nyu. its pretty cool though, cuz im into that type of sceen

I did a summer program at BU, which I feel like is a very similar campus, and I loved it there, being able to step outside a building hop on a subway and go anywhere is awesome, I love the city even though I’ve only been to New York a handful of times in my life. Oh well, I’ll visit a few more times to get more of a feel before I finally decide, thanks for the reassurance, hopefully I make the right choice.

Oh, and if anyone can answer this I’d appreciate it: How many Indians kids are there (from India lol not native american), I’m Indian and I feel like a good sized Indian population would definitely make it a lot easier to fit in as a non-hipster?

You won’t have trouble finding people who have similar interest because the student body is so diverse. I would say there is definitely a large Indian population, particularly in the business school. There are a lot of Indian culture organizations and clubs. I would say the Indian student body at NYU is one of the most connected at NYU.

sdesai,

Haha, you will be surrounded by the East Village (Asian) Indian restaurants, some very good, though maybe not as good as what you are used to (if you enjoy home-cooked Indian meals). Of NYC’s Asian population, the largest group is Chinese, then Korean, followed by Indian.

I noticed quite a few mentioned Indian in Accepted Students this year and last (when I first started reading the threads).

You will find many types of people (besides by ethnic background) at NYU (as well as in NYC). That is the beauty of attending NYU in NYC.

Haha, my son looks like a hipster from the 70s (bell bottoms, dress, hair), but he does not drink coffee; he is into music but loves comedy movies. He has a very good Indian friend who will be a suite-mate with him next year. The group is a mix of backgrounds, Asian, European, Mexican, Jewish, etc.

Don’t just stay with your group. College is a time to meet people from faraway places or cultures too. It will enhance your college experience and you as a person.

There are 43,000 students at NYU, 21,000+ undergrads. You will not have trouble finding a place to fit in, either culturally, socially, physically, mentally, or ideologically.

There’s also a huge population of brown kids, especially in Stern and premed. A lot tend to stick together, almost impenetrably. And as the other kid said, they probably have the most vibrant presence among the cultural clubs.

go to NYU sammy jk jk do whatever you feel better. have fun visiting BU
