I realized this past year that I really enjoy using programs like Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop and creating posters and logos and flyers and things of that nature. I’m a theatre major at UT Austin, but thought about pursuing a double major or minor in graphic design. However, my college and major restricts me from double majoring or minoring, and UT’s certificate program doesn’t offer anything I’m looking for. So I’ve been looking ahead to taking summer classes, but I wanted to know which schools in Texas had the best programs. Any insight?
@Decomfortable are you already getting a BFA and does your program allow you to take classes at the local CC? Because I would think you could pick up a lot of the practical skills, even a certificate, at the local community college. Graphic design as part of an overall visual arts program would be very intensive and with your theatre work you won’t have time for that. However, if you are on track for a BFA anyway then you have some artistic training (albeit performing rather than visual arts) which should help you with the aesthetic side of your graphic design interest. The layout and computer skills can be picked up at the local CC.
Good luck!
UT Austin informal classes - computer skills on the right side. Very affordable.
