The Education of Charlie Banks
Wonder Boys

Both are good ‘college’ themed dramas and neither had been mentioned yet.

I’m surprised Van Wilder isn’t getting more play. It looks like it was only mentioned once.

Write this down…rent Van Wilder.

I was an extra in “Breaking Away.” It got an Academy Award for best original screenplay. Great movie that launched the careers of Dennis Quaid, Daniel Stern, John Ashton, and others.

Cool! Were you a student at Indiana at the time? What did you do in the movie?

I LOVED that film, and maybe it’s time to watch it again; it’s been a while. Thanks for the reminder, Schmaltz

I was a grad student and was watching them film a scene. A lady with a clipboard came up and asked if I wanted to be an extra. There is a scene in which the rich kid is driving thru campus in his convertible Mercedes, and the “cutters” are going the other way on the same street. The cutters put their car in reverse and are backing up and riding alongside the Mercedes. I’m on the right side of the screen, wearing a white shirt and walking with a short girl. We turn and look at the odd scene. While we were waiting for the scene to start, the guy who played Moocher (Jackie Earl Hailey) was standing around with us, flirting with the girl I was walking with. I’m also in the stands right behind the cutters when they celebrate winning the race. Oddly enough, the prevailing belief on campus was that the movie that was being shot all over Bloomington (tentatively titled at the time “Bambino”), was going to be a 3rd-rate piece of junk…it had a crazy plot and no stars.

We’re definitely going to have to see Breaking Away again. I will look for you, Schmaltz.

The Hangover 2? I mean, that one guy was from Stanford
