Many halls/suites are coed, but not individual rooms.

Rooming is done by students (as in, there's a student who is in charge of assigning everybody's room in the dorm), so theoretically I think it could be possible if you were close enough to the Room Assignment Chair, but the MIT livejournal community came to the conclusion last year that nobody's ever heard of it being done.

Unofficially, of course, there are a lot of mixed-sex two-person singles, if you know what I mean. ;)

Actually, I think that having a gf/bf officially sharing a double might be a bad idea. In the unfortunate event that the couple broke up mid-term, it would become a very uncomfortable and stressful living situation. At least with those coed two-person singles, the one not officially living in the room has somewhere else to go if things turn sour. Just my two cents from experience.

That is TRUE.

:-D

I do know of one bf/gf pair living in a double this past year.

So it has happened.

Given that the question was

... do you ever **get* a roommate of the opposite sex?*

I suspect Foofoff was asking if one could be randomly placed with an opposite-sex roommate. JLP, did the pair you know about choose to live together, or were they "assigned"? I'm guessing the former....

Haha, I missed that part of the original question. No, you don't ever get an opposite-sex roommate unless you persistently ask for one! :)

It's definitely not something that's done lightly, even in the non-double situation -- before everybody in D-Entry agreed to let my boyfriend and I share a two-person suite last year, they had to be very satisfied that we were going to stay together. It's definitely only something serious couples do.

EDIT: Actually, "boyfriend" was the wrong word to use up there. :)

:D Congratulations, Mollie!! :D

woooow, congrats mollie!!! gorgeous ring....

Hah, yes, I was asking to make sure there wasn't a possibility of getting landed with a member of the opposite sex for a roommate.

CONGRATULATIONS MOLLIE!

Wow, the idea of putting people in coed rooms without their permission... that sounds like an excellent basis for a sexual harassment lawsuit right there! O.o

haha mollie, was that "tip" u were thinking about? =P we need like a new BIG thread devoted to that matter... ;P
