So, what are the Canadian Public Elite Schools? My family is thinking about moving to Canada, and I was wondering what were the schools in Canada that are similar in their own league to American Public Elite schools like Stuy, and TJ.

Come on Canadian CCers!!

Lisgar Collegiate in Ottawa is a really good school. Canterbury High School, also in Ottawa, was ranked as the number one high school for the arts in Canada.

Macleans Magazine did a ranking of Canadian public high schools in 2005.

Also, if you're considering private schools, take a look at Upper Canada College (best in Canada, boys-only, Toronto), Havergal (girl's equivalent, Toronto), Ashbury College (Ottawa), Rothesay Netherwood (NS), Brentwood (BC), and St. Andrew's (Suburbs of Toronto) are all great. In Quebec, there's Selwyn House, Lower Canada College, and Coll

Thanks Jonathon1, but I am really interested in Math/Science oriented schools. I'll check out the rankings.

bumpity bump, please!!!!

If you want an "elite" education, then you should probably avoid public schools and go to a private school instead.

Alberta and Quebec both have very good public education systems. Try to avoid Ontario.

It kinda depends on where you're moving to. If you were to go to Ontario, then there are some.

There's Bayview Secondary School, which is an IB school. It's the only public school that offers it. It's ranked third I believe in Ontario. I only know this one cause I live near there.

Some group just published their rankings on the best high schools in Ontario, but I can't find the magazine in my house. I'll find it tomorrow. But if you want to know more about private schools in the Toronto area, you can ask me cause I know a bit of that stuff.

Friend of mine goes to Westdale Secondary School. It's supposed to be a good school and has very well regarded math.

Thanks for the responses guys. I'm not really interested in private schools because they are so expensive. I also saw something called the Fraser Rankings, are they good?

No, it's not. There's also Colonel By Seconday School in Ottawa which also offers the IB diploma. I'm sure there are other public schools that do the same.

i kno vaughn road academy also offers ib but that only if you're planning to come to toronto. WOO CANADA IS AWESOME!!! i live in downtown toronto . it's great :)

Old Scona in Edmonton is one of the better public schools in Canada

There's lots of public schools in Canada that offer the IB.

To the OP: If you're looking for schools on the level of Stuy, you're not going to find any. There's just nothing that outstanding in Canada, really. I'd suggest applying to private schools here.

Yeah, most good private schools will have financial aid. Have you considering applying to Canadian boarding schools? Trinity College School offers really good financial aid and is perhaps the best co-ed prep school in Canada. UCC is all-boys and is usually regarded as the best school in Canada, but the financial aid sucks. I remember reading that only 6% of the kids there are on it.

Good luck!

Where are you and your family looking to live in Canada?

If I were you, I'd go to Toronto, Montreal, Vancouver, Ottawa, Halifax, or Calgary. :)

Come to Vancouver!!! :] U-hill I believe is public... and ranked really high. It's on the UBC campus too.

UTS is excellent. The vast majority of people there are incredibly smart, not just rich as happens with some Canadian private schools.

Vancouver has a lot of AP and some IB schools... Sir Winston Churchill (IB) is probably one of the best public schools here. University Hill is okay, but I've heard that there aren't a lot of APs, and its ranking has fallen over the years.

Also, for finding good math/science schools, best thing is to look at the rankings for Canadian math/science contests (e.g. the Euclid math contest)

Note: Financial aid at UCC doesn't suck all that much, it's just that not many people who attend actually qualify for it - tons of rich people at the school.

Thanks for you responses so far guys. I have heard of Churchill before, but since I'm a rising junior, I think I may have passed the deadline for the IB program.

You already did, so the IB program is too late for you. If you're a rising junior, then I suppose youre going to move when youre a rising senior. Well, in my view, you should go to private school because they will take the effort to make you a more attractive applicant to schools and that their university conselling program is stronger. Public schools' guidance offices have one counsellor take care of at least 200 kids, so they probably wont help you as much or give you the attention you need.

oh yeah, UTS is like impossible to get in, cause once people in the grade 7 opening classes get in, they never leave
