I'm trying to figure out a general schedule for my time at UCSB so I will never be super overwhelmed in my studies and classes. I'm pre-bio right now, but I'm planning on either a physiology or biological science B.S. major. I heard 109ABC (Ochem) and EEMB 129-130 (genetics) will be the tough classes. What are your thoughts and opinions? Thanks in advance!

Sample schedule for pre med is given by UCSB pre med advising as

But for the Winter of Sophomore year it says I should take:
MCDB 1B
EEMB 2
MCDB 1BL or EEMB 2L
Chem 109B
Chem 6AL
Physics 6B + 6BL

Doesn’t that seem like science overload?

Yes, OChem is a big weeder class. I know of many people who were hopeful doctors or planned to work in the medical field, that because of this, had to give up their “dreams” for Communications or Linguistics. I highly suggest that if you are not prepared to go through with 4 years of torture, and many years of torture after college, that you drop out of the major now so you don’t waste time. Many of the people who don’t pass O-Chem never really wanted it bad enough and/or their parents want them to be successful money-generating doctors. Do something you love. If you are truly determined to save the world from harmful diseases and gunshot wounds, then Godspeed

Should I take Ochem with bio my sophomore year and then physics my junior year or take physics and bio my sophomore year and save Ochem for junior year?

take ochem and physics sophomore year, bio junior year.

your first quarter, i assume you will be taking chem 1a. Focus on that, otherwise, you will easily have to retake it. I know many people who passed with D’s or just failed and could not get Chem 1A till this quarter. Kinda sucks because it set them back

Aw Shouldn’t I take bio my sophomore year though? Cause That way I can take some upper division bio classes my junior year that will prepare me for the MCAT.

With a little creative use of summer sessions you should be able to make your sophomore year winter much much easier. That’s my plan at least. I’m doing FSSP and probably another summer session the next year to get classes out of the way so my only science courses that quarter are the 3rd quarters of bio and ochem with their labs.
