<p>It isn't like CC is going out and forcing people to sign on and log in to this site- lots differnt than my mother talking my ear off while I am driving her around to do her errands
IMO
If you are on the message boards- that pretty much is saying to me- tht you want others opinions
like they say - if you don't like what you are watching- change the chanel or turn it off- no one is forcing you to read the posts</p>
<p>I admit some people care a lot more what other people think than I do- if I worried about what others thought- I probably wouldn't be so frank that I didn't graduate from high school or that I had sex was I was 15 or that my husband has been in recovery for 10 years.</p>
<p>I care about what my kids think, I care about what my husband thinks but mostly I care about what I think-
If I really was concerned about paying $40,000 a year for a college most people had never heard of, I might be upset- but we weren't paying for the name- we were paying for the education.
When I think of the term "top college" I think of the education- that doesn't always have to come with a pricey pricetag.
There are great programs at state schools- and some of the most expensive schools have aid that brings it down to teh state tuition level.
I know in some fields the name of school does matter- one federal judge for example that i know only accepts clerks from a couple universities- incidentally which would have never accepted * her*.
But how many people feel that clerking for this particular federal judge is the only acceptable career path?
Lots of routes in life</p>
<p>I want to hear rorosen's report on Sinner's Alley since I sledom visit there! Especially if he heard any further comments about male cuteness.;)</p>
<p>Exactly. What is it with Brown? I saw the same thing at my high school and a dozen others. Loads and loads into HYPS, even MIT, all iced at Brown. Are they looking for a certain kind of freaky individualist;) Mind you, this was 15 years ago, but it's still going on, according to you.</p>
<p>"Are they looking for a certain kind of freaky individualist "</p>
<p>I think they are. I think they look for people who will take advantage of the open curriculum. Perhaps more independence and maturity than some of the other elites.</p>
<p>Mathmom is right-- Brown does care a great deal that kids are a match for the the freedom in the curriculum... but of course there are more very self-motivated people than there are spots, so, clearly, deserving kids are not admitted.</p>
<p>It's all a crapshoot (as to who gets in where)! Stats and acceptance rates--and to some extent yield--tell the story. The rest is apocryphal/anectodal.</p>
<p>I don't subscribe to the "it's all a crapshoot" theory. First, schools skim off the obvious rejects and then average applicants. Then it's more like a crap-shoot, but not until after the first stages.</p>
<p>Allow me to comment on a flippant
Lifetime Advantages of Attending Top Colleges</p>
<p>As parents we want the best for
our children. Best schools, clothes
upbringing and..... future husband/wife.
Naturally we can't pick & choose their
spouses, but we can send them off
to schools where they have the best
opportunity to connect with someone
of our culling. </p>
<p>Did I tell you I sent my
daughter off to Bryn Mawr College?<br>
I also suggested she work part time as
a baby sitter for some of the more
affluent families in the Bryn Mawr area.
Taught her how to differentiate between
old money & new money and.... I even
suggested she study in the discipline
of Anna Nicole Smith</p>
<p>Hell.... who knows, she may even get her
degree.</p>
<p>If you can choose your kid's college, you are more powerful than the overwhelming majority of CC posters! Only the very richest (whether old or new money) can feel some confidence that they can buy their child''s way into any college. How many Hummers and red convertibles did you say you owned again? Are they the ones parked in the BMC parking lot? (j/k)</p>
<p>Anna Nicole Smith always reminds me of this exchange (which I here have attributed to Churchill--but I think that's apocryphal)</p>
<p>Churchill: Madam, would you sleep with me for five million pounds?
Socialite: My goodness, Mr. Churchill... Well, I suppose... we would have to discuss terms, of course...
Churchill: Would you sleep with me for five pounds?
Socialite: Mr. Churchill, what kind of woman do you think I am?!
Churchill: Madam, we've already established that. Now we are haggling about the price.</p>
<p>It's originally from George Bernard Shaw...or Disraeli, I've heard both. Sounds most like Shaw. Although, it has elements of Madam Astor and Churchill's tete-a-tete, i.e., </p>
<p>"If you were my husband I would poison your coffe"
....
"Madam, if I was your husband I'd driink it."</p>
