What are they and will it boost your chances when applying to colleges if you say you want to do them?

And please don't give me the whole "your EC's must show passion and fit your intended major so putting down a rare major you show no interest in won't help you at all".

Just this once, let's assume you DO "fit" the major, whatever it may be and just maybe you were planning on putting 'undecided' to keep an open mind. Given that, in such a situation, would it help you more, solely in terms of gaining admission, to go ahead and put down that obscure major you can easily prove yourself to be interested in?

Unless you are applying for a major that is "restricted" in some way what you put down for "intended major" will have virtually no effect on your admission chances. Keep in mind that what may be an obscure major to a high school student is nothing of the sort once you get to the university level. To support a major that "obscure" field by definition has many universities around the world that offer not just undergrad majors, but graduate programs through the PhD. There will be international journals, conferences, you name it!

That said, if you have high school Latin, put down Classics. Most departments are small and many have funds available for small to medium sized scholarships. Be warned - in a good department Classics is one of the hardest majors you can take.
