How important is the possible major you put down on the common app for Yale?

Not at all unless it's an unusual major and items in your application verify your interest. For instance, if you say you want to be a Classics major because you think it will help you, but you've never taken Greek or Latin or done any EC that points to the major, it looks like a ploy. That being said, Yale is generally looking to strengthen its reputation in the sciences, so students with a strong science background may have a slight edge.

Admission, you think classic major is unusual?

Classics is definitely a niche major. But, as I said above, don't try to game the system. If you have nothing in your background that suggests an honest interest in Classics, don't put down Classics. These admissions officers have seen a lot and they can probably tell, at least some of the time, who's trying to game things.

At a recent info session, the admissions officer said that an indicated major is only a tiny sliver into your thinking process or preferences, that's it. It has no bearing since they know many, many students change majors.

But wouldn't you consider that it's more difficult to get accepted to a major such as Art (for example)?

You don't get accepted into a specific major, you get accepted to the college as a whole. You then choose your major later on (and yes, there are a couple of selective majors, but the vast majority are not.)
