middle school: 5-8, ~300 kids
high school: 9-12, ~2000 kids

i love my high school. whether you like small schools really depends on whether you fit into the main crowd there. for me, it was a relief to finally meet other people who like science and literature and nerdy stuff like that.

plus there's much less drama. if anyone does anything in a small school, it's permanently tacked onto his/her reputation. no one cares in a larger school.

one con of a big school is that you might not get to have as many classes with your friends. however, it's worked out well for me in that most of my friends take the same level AP/honors classes as me.

my school is small (600)
like others said: it's hard to get the courses you want cuz they are only offered once a day, and every one is rich and white lol
the pros of a small school: everyone knows everyone (at least by name) so we're all close, classes are small (3-30 people) usually low 20s so teachers can give you individual attention
my whole town is stinkin' rich which explains the whiteness and druggies so we can actually afford decently good things; we just can't open many AP classes cuz no one is interested
pros of my school: cut cards (honor roll peeps can skip 3 classes of their choice in a marking period)
and free periods (underclassmen and upperclassmen don't have to stay in study hall for off periods but instead we roam around the school) and this only works cuz we are a small school :]

my school is really small. there's probably like 460 kids in the highschool. and it really sucks. i know everyone there and we're not diverse at all. and we have like 2 AP classes.

Yeah, my class is the biggest so far with around 870~900 people. I like it this way; I also wouldn't like everyone knowing everyone too personally and whatever classes/activities they're in, etc...more variety and a lot of other things I can't really mention now.

I don't know of any schools around here that have that many students. Maybe after you go 40 miles, and you're in the suburbs, the schools are bigger. The biggest schools in my area have 800 students. I know my school attracts many students who don't want to go to those big schools. If it weren't for students from other districts, my district would be even tinier. About 25% of the 180 students don't live in my district.

Bigger high schools are better. Period. At least you have the chance to challenge yourself. Though it's nice to not have to make outlines for APUSH, I think that's really a detriment in the long run. While it's nice to not have to write timed essays in English, those are now hard for me. The SAT was really the first time that I had to write an essay in so short a time. I would much rather have the extra homework than not learn anything. I don't know about you, but I don't consider making posters an effective learning strategy, and nearly all of my college prep courses have curricula like that.
