What are the requirements to Cal Grant and how does it work? I need answers asap!

Hi everyone
i am transferring from a community college to a private art school. Since i am late to register for this semester i will only take one class (costs $640/unit, $1920 the course) and pay out of pocket. I cannot afford to be a full time student unless i take financial aid. Unfortunately the pell grant only pays up to $4000 a year which is only about a fourth of my tuition, so i still cannot afford it. I know that cal grant pay about $9000 and i would like to know the requirements to be eligible. I am pretty sure i have at least a 2.0 gpa (that's the minimum gpa required, right?) but i do not know what other factors are considered. My family is a low income family but how low does it have to be in order i be eligible? I am worried because unless i know for sure i can receive a cal grant i cannot afford to go to this school. How do i file for cal grant, what are the requirements and how long does it take to know if i am eligible or not? thanks

thanks for the link but i already been there. I have all the requirements except i don’t know what the minimum gpa is and the maximum income. i don’t seem to find a solution to that online. It says i would have to meet the minimum gpa requirement but what is the minimum?

The info is all there, you just have to really search for it:

For a transfer calgrant (which I am assuming is what you would be looking at as you do not mention getting the Cal in CC), the GPA is 2.4.

thank you for some reason i couldn’t find it. guess i didn’t look hard enough

i have another question. I just reviewed my transcript and my gpa is under 2.0. I used to have an average of 2.7 until last semester when i got all F’s since i got sick and missed most of the classes and finals. What can i do to bring that gpa up? I am taking a class at the school i transfered to, if i receive a good grade and my gpa goes up will cal grant consider that gpa or the gpa from my community college? Thing is, i want to apply now for cal grant (anytime before march 2) and i will not be done with the class i’m taking now, so i won’t have any records/gpa from that school. what can i do in this case?

File the FAFSA (which is required for the Cal Grant anyway) and ask the school you are transferring to about finacial aid. Cal Grant is only one component of a financial aid package. (And it seems you may not qualify for a Cal Grant) There are also loans and work/study. You mention a $4,000 Pell grant - Have you filed the FAFSA to find out if you are eligible for a Pell grant?

i am awaiting a new pin to complete my fafsa. I did talk with a financial aid advisor at the school i just transferred and basically they cannot help, i would have to apply for pell grant and cal grant, there is no financial aid through the school. I have received a pell grant before to pay for community college and the advisor told me i might have been issued a cal grant as well that might be on “reserve” once i transfer to a 4yr university. I called cal grant to ask and unfortunately i wasn’t qualified for cal grant (i was told because of the point system, i asked if that was the gpa and the representative said no,i guess my parents income was high)

Since the economy has been getting from bad to worst my parents’ work and income has also declined (they are self employed) and i was hoping since they filed less income this year i could meet the minimum income requirements.

I try to avoid getting loans since the school’s tuition is high and i will have a hard time paying it back. But that might be my only option

Does anyone happen to know if i was to complete one semester at my new school if the cal grant would consider that gpa for next time i applied or would they consider my gpa from junior college?

Maybe you should try to transfer to a school that offers financial aid.

I am not sure how recently you had the bad term with all the Fs, but it sounds like you should have taken a complete W from the term, so Ws not Fs. Is it too late to make that change?

If you just finished a fall term in Dec/Jan and missed all your finals, you might find an advisor who can help you withdraw from the campus and give you either all Ws or all Is and then you could make up the finals?
