What are the requirements at Brandeis?

2 PE courses (doesn't count for 32 credit minimum)
3 years of foreign language or equivalent
1 course each in:
non-western studies
quantitative reasoning
social science
mathematics/hard science
humanities
fine arts
and the freshman humanities seminar (USEM), freshman writing seminar (UWS), and a writing intensive-labeled course

i believe that's all.

Three YEARS of foreign language?

Three semesters. Or a 620 or better on the SAT II exam. Or a 4 or better on an AP. Or a placement test and a subsequent approval.

620 is ridiculously easy to get too. But 3 semesters I really don't think is a high enough requirement.

i should've said semesters (I was thinking in high school terms). but as long as you took three years of one in high school, you should only need to take one to meet your requirement (if that). my final in AP French was the Brandeis placement exam (yes, my teacher loved me) and i was five questions away from being exempt. :( even the people who slept through the entire class would've advanced onto the third semester.

I took 7 years of high school Spanish (we were on block schedule so a year was packed into a semester) and still think that ALL students should have at the bare minimum 3 semesters of a language above that. I passed out at Spanish 5 and went to Spanish 7, but am still going to take 3 semesters of Spanish because you are not fluent after high school foreign language.

That's just my personal opinion though. It's college's thankless job to fix the problem of the American education system that is lacking in language education. It's one of my soapbox issues. :P

In contrast to Silver, I took 4 years in high school at the Honor level and I was able to pass out of the foreign language requirement.

The language placement tests are online. Go to brandeis.edu, type in the language you are involved in in the search box, and it will be there.

Does anyone know if we can satisfy those GE requirements by taking them at a community college?

Yes you can. You can transfer up to four classes. Be sure to make sure the classes you are going to take are transferable. Contact Irene Widugiris (search for her on the Brandeis website) to seek transfer approval.

4 classes as in 4 semesters, right?

4 classes as in 1 semester's worth.
