Can we drop the hostility and all agree that the California has the best uni system in the states and it's better than almost any COUNTRY on the map. We are beyond privileged...most of the universities are WORLD class..so arguing about tiers is like arguing about apples and oranges. Cheers.

you realize your saying this becuase others arent agreeing about sdsu with you, the sole advacator for the school in this thread

you realize you're stating your opinion as to why you think i said that. Maybe I am, Maybe I am not. But people are arguing about Harvey Mudd, UCLA, UCSD tier 1 tier 2 etc. etc. when they're all FIRST CLASS schools. So perhaps I was saying that without an alterior motive like your post suggests.

"Then why does almost everyone consider Caltech a tier 1 overall "university"?? There is a double standard here."

Harvey Mudd = college. Caltech = university.

=)

so... universities are automatically better than colleges?

for undergrad, i think not.... considering that is ALL colleges do.

It was a bad joke on the difference between a "university" and a "college": Harvey Mudd cannot be an overall great "university" since it's a college. Sorry you didn't catch that.

In addition, here are a list of majors (from the collegeboard site, which may be dated):

It seems to me that Caltech is closer to being an overall excellent school than Mudd is.

In England Harvey Mudd would be considered a University..The distinction there is rather different...college is the equivalent of high school. So I guess it depends where your feet and perspective are situated on the globe.

And how many people actually go to Caltech to major in "Liberal Arts and Sciences", "Business, Management, and Marketing", and "History"?

Caltech is closer to being an overall excellent school because it offers degrees in a few liberal arts? How many degrees does Caltech hand out in those majors every year? A dozen? Harvey Mudd doesn't offer degrees in non-science/math, but it provides an excellent education in liberal arts. And like I have already said over and over and over again... Mudd has FOUR other undergraduate colleges right here. If you include all the off-campus majors that we have, then it blows Caltech away in terms of possible majors. You can get a degree from HMC in Dance or Women's Studies or Music or practically anything you want.

I won't even bother to add Scripps and Pitzer...

atomicfusion is right in that one has more diverse opportunities in non-science, naon-engineering classes at Mudd than Caltech. If such things are important to students they would be wise to not attend Caltech.

One thing, though, that's worth mentioning is that Caltech has significantly more offerings in science, math, and engineering than Mudd (both research and classes), which is usually a more important consideration for the people who must choose between the schools.

Good grief, get Mudd out of this thread. It doesn't have a business program, so why even bring it up????

In that case, why choose Mudd in the first place? People might choose those subjects as their second major, but how many Mudd students choose those subjects as their only major? Again, Mudd seems at odds in a thread for a business major.

This thread is more a discussion now about the best overall undergraduate schools in California. Caltech does not have a legitimate business program either. So if Mudd has to get out of this thread, then why doesn't Caltech? Stop the double standards.

There are a few people who come to Mudd and decide that science/math/engineering isn't right for them and just minor in one of those and major in a traditional liberal arts major. Not everyone goes into college knowing exactly what they want to do. Even if they think they want to go into science, it might change very shortly once they start taking college level classes.

I agree that no one who wants to be a business major should go to Mudd. It obviously is not a top school in California for business. However, this thread is now more concerned about the top undergraduate OVERALL schools. It's preposterous to say that Mudd isn't a top undergraduate school overall in California, especially if everyone agrees Caltech is. I'm not at all saying Mudd is as great a school at Caltech, but it does offer an overall wider field of study than Caltech (Caltech offers more specialized degrees in science, but Mudd offers a greater education in the liberal arts and possible degrees in the liberal arts). So excluding Mudd on the basis of "it's too specialized" alone is ridiculous.

No need to be rude. Frankly, I don't care about any of the colleges in California. As for Caltech, it does have some sort of a business/econ program. I checked before I posted that earlier post.

In any case, Caltech is a university and Mudd isn't. (Although size would imply otherwise.)

...as are most other threads. Fortunately, the Berkeley cheerleaders haven't arrived yet.

Occidental partners with Cal Tech for 3/2 engineering program. I think you
can also take individual courses there as well.
