What are things people say about your major that annoys you?

Mine for mathematics: "So are you going to be a math teacher, because what else can a math major do?"
There is plenty a math major can do, especially if one gets a PhD in the subject, which would provide fat paychecks.

I’m usually careful to say Biology/Education, because if I just say biology the automatic reply is : “So you want to be a doctor!”

No.

“Nurse? Why not just be a doctor?” T_T

^Pfft! Don’t listen to them. Nurses make plenty, especially in certain practices. (Some make more than doctors do.) Plus, it’s a rewarding job! =)

Don’t listen to those idiots. =P

English- “Why don’t you major in something in something that’ll get you a job?”

-mentions double major-

“Oh, well, still. Why not drop English and major in two things that’ll get you a good job?”

Oh yes, because my job is the most important thing in my entire life.

Knowledge & Passions >>>> Job

…in my opinion, of course. I’m sure some people on CC will disagree. =P

“What are you majoring in?”

“Advertising?”

“Oh…why not major in business? You could get a lot more job offer with that.”

“You’re too smart for that.”

Or my personal favorite: “Isn’t that what all the athletes and stupid people major in?”

For whatever reason, people think that advertising is a soft major, when it’s really business oriented and is one of the most competitive fields there is.

Rixs- I agreee…I believe a successful job is formed out of passions. However, there are limitations to that like how I would like to become an astrophysicist, meaning research and maxed out salaries of hovering below 100k, which would not provide me with the type of lifestyle I am use to and I feel obligated to give back to my mother for working so hard to provide the kind of life I have.

Also nurses can make quite a bit of money…100k easily at a respected hospital with a bachelors…and 180k+ with an advanced degree.

^^^

No nurse makes 100,000 UNLESS they are the supervisor/director or have an MSN or seniority. The average nurse, BSN or Associate’s, makes only $50,000/yr.

Economics - good luck finding a job ever

Finance - “how are you going to spend all that money?”

buy a ****ing yacht to bang my trophy wife on you dumbass

Actually there are young nurses at Stanford University Medical Hospital that get 100k a year. The average in some area like Silicon Valley averages around 80k.

^^^

Link? Level of Education? Profession?

I have done my research (I’m heading into Nursing), and the only way for a Nurse to make that kind of money is if they are a director/supervisor, have seniority or a MSN (for anesthesia or Nurse Practitioning).

But a regular Nurse who is just an RN? Probably not.

Philosophy, Politics, and Law (PPL)

“You’re majoring in ppl [people]?! What, you want to be a social worker?”

Grr… No I don’t.

Note: This was also posted somewhere else but I like these threads XD so i am “double” posting…

“What’s your major?”

“Spanish.”

“Oh, so you’re going to be a Spanish teacher?”

“Are you trying to kill yourself?” and “Why don’t you take easier classes, like [insert humanities class]”

Engineering

“Do you have a social life since all you must do is study all the time?”

“Nurse? Why not just be a doctor?” T_T
I named a 10 page research paper about nursing those exact words lol

@ThePrincessBride, I also have not heard income for nurses that high. It’s good money either way. I certainly don’t mind. I believe the average nurse nowadays makes 60k. It continues to increase from there too, with bonuses and vacation time.

Engineering

“wooooo tough one”

but that doesn’t bother me, compared to

“wooo…tough one, you’re a girl so like…are you good at math?”
I honestly have no clue what to say to that? Um…no s*** I’m good at math.

Classics:

“What’s that?”

“So, like, English?”

“So you want to teach?”

Electrical Engineering:
“So… are you just looking for a husband/favorable male:female ratio/etc.?”
“How are you not socially inept?”
“Is that a lot of math?”
And my least favorite- “You’re like really smart, right?”
I have no clue how to answer that. They reiterate it when they hear what my school is too: “So… you are smart.” I guess…?

Math

“So you want to be an accountant? or a math teacher?”
