What are things people say about your major that annoys you?

Math and Music double major… People seem genuinely shocked that I am not asian, which is a bit racist?

" dude, can I have some gum?"
" sure [gives him one]"
“blushes”
“it blows big bubbles”

Ok, so people who work in the medical field or engineering make more money than someone with a degree in, say, Psychology or Sociology or English. So does that mean everyone should go to med school? No, that’s simply ridiculous. Are there businessmen out there that make more money than nurses? Yep. Are there nurses that make more than some businessmen? Yep. Just because you’re majoring in something different doesn’t mean you won’t have earning potential or that you won’t be able to get a job. That assumption made by people over and over is what is so maddening. Even more frustrating is that it almost always comes from someone who has never been to college or someone who simply has no clue what they’re talking about. Being asked once or twice isn’t the issue. It’s the “you won’t ever be able to find a job!” that some of us hear on a daily basis that makes us mad.

I think some people assume I’m crazy because I’m a psych major. It is true that many, many psych majors I have met do seem to be rather…unstable, but we aren’t ALL that way. I do think unstable people tend to major in psychology though because they want to figure themselves out.

You don’t even have to have a Business Administration minor to work in HR. A lot of HR departments hire Psychology/Sociology majors, just like many marketing agencies hire Art majors.

People have this streamline thinking that in order to do “A”, you must major in “B” when that is certainly not the case. Many majors, even Psychology, overlab in many different fields including medical and business.

Oh believe me, I understand where you are coming from. The fear of not getting a job has made me switch from Journalism to Nursing. But I guess, in this economy where there are more college grads than there are jobs to fill, people are so focused and absorbed on getting a job and making a decent money. And to most people, getting a [good] job means having a “practical”/more applicable major.

Either way, I’d take a Humanities major anyday over the [stereotypical] business major.

Computer Science

“But you’re not a geek! That doesn’t fit you very well.”

“HAHAHAHAHAHAHA.”

“Do you want to spend the rest of your life with your eyes glued to the computer screen, without a social life?”

^^^ A friend of ours majored in industrial psychology! He can’t find a job to save his life!
