What are your best tips for networking in investment banking?

I hear that networking is one of the most important factors.

Being in a college that banks visit with hiring in mind (in CC-speak, “target colleges”) is the most important factor. Family contacts are next and after that come networking.

“Family contacts” means privilege. That’s not a skill.

Networking is a skill. Consult your college alumni database and send your alums an email. The basic format is to ask for an “informational interview/discussion” to learn about the role, ask them questions, and, ideally, to give them your resume. Don’t be too pushy, come off as genuinely interested in the job, and just try to connect with them in more meaningful ways than just wanting their jobs (although they rightly assume that that’s your goal). There’s no shame in saying “I want your job,” but after you say that try to establish some sort of bond based on shared opinions, personality, background, etc. And of course be very friendly!

^^The OP did not ask which skills are needed; he asked for best tips for networking and continued to say that s/he “hears that networking is one of the most important factors”. I thought I would list for the OP the three top factors of getting an IB job.

Google and do your research. That will answer your question.
