What are your thoughts about travel in the time of Covid?

We aren’t flying again until August. Fully expect the planes to be full.

Since 2020, I’ve done 6 transcon roundtrips and one to Cabo. I use the 3M 1860 N95 masks. I’ve always tested a couple of days after each trip. So far so good. I am doing another one tomorrow and I will wear my mask and frequent use of hand sanitizer.

Did you keep your mask on for the entire duration of the flight, or did you take it off to eat/drink?

I take it off to eat and drink and I must confess I take it off for 10 minutes maybe 2, 3 times on a 5-1/2 hr transcon flight. I need a break from the tight elastic on my head. I use gloves whenever I use the restroom.

Just booked flights to baltimore for June/July. They are already pretty full (no cheap seats left).

I’m going no matter what (daughter is playing in the world championship for her sport). I don’t think it will be more risky than it is now. Those who want to comply/be safe will continue to wear mask, be vaccinated, boosted, wash their hands, stay home when they have a cold…and others will continue to do whatever they want. Forcing them to wear masks when they weren’t doing the rest didn’t help that much. I’m a lot more conscious of my own actions now and watch where I put my hands, what the tables and seat look like, carry wipes with me.

I work at a school and when they lifted the mask requirement, you could see how germy those kids really are! Picking their noses, sniffing, hands in their mouths (we have a bunch losing teeth and they are always wiggling them)…I’m sure they were doing all that all along, but we just didn’t notice. I use more hand sanitizer now (on them and me) than I did with masks. I wipe the shared supplies (pens, white boards, markers) more, wipe the tables more, stand farther apart.

If anyone has tried a variety of KN95, N95 or FFP2 masks in order to identify the most comfortable, could you please report to the rest of us?

My daughter bought some KN95 masks on Amazon last summer for a long flight, but they were so scratchy and fit so awkwardly that I double masked with surgical masks instead.

My favorite KN95s have been Breatheze. That said I just ordered 3M aura N95s at the recommendation of a number of people.

There’re some good suggestions in this CC thread:

Thanks for the mask suggestions!

And another request for a COVID travel related recommendation – what travel insurance policies offer good coverage for international travel related expenses associates with testing positive for / falling sick with COVID abroad?

Many.

In case this hasn’t yet been posted, Lyft also “lyfted” the mask mandate and will give customers the option to keep the windows open.

I’d first look into what trip interruption coverage your credit cards provide. Some of them, particularly the premium cards (i.e. those with annual fees) designed for travel, may offer sufficient coverage for what you need.

The airline industry is suggesting that the pre-travel testing requirement will be removed by sometime “next month”. Unclear if that means May 3 or another date still to be decided:

If anyone likes Stephen Colbert, he used this in his opening last night. It’s 8 1/2 minutes long. We thought it was cute - and brought up some very good points.

N95 3m Aura hands down. For a long trip I find the over the head elastic more comfortable.

For convenience on short errands I wear one of the KN95’s in the house. I don’t like our current brand as the earloops are too short for me, but it’s fine as long as I don’t wear it for more than an hour.

I have Vida masks which I LOVE and which fit me perfectly. I will order more so I have them for all of our summer travel.

DOJ will appeal the mask mandate decision per CDC request.

But to be clear, the DOJ are not seeking a stay, so the mask mandate will not return.

And this likely won’t get heard until August or so. So…my travel plans will not at all take this into consideration (I’m trying to keep this thread on topic!).

CBS reported that 55% of Americans support continued masking on public transportation. That surprised me.
