What are your thoughts on the NYIT BS/DO Program?

I know someone who can get me in, and was just wondering if anyone here had any perspectives or views on it? Anyone have first hand experience?

What kind of residency placement do graduates of this program get? If you “know someone who can get you in,” I question the program’s rigor and reputation. Also, while there are many excellent DOs in practice, the Osteopathy degree is not quite as respected as the MD. That’s why it’s even more important to find out where the graduates of a joint program culminating in a DO get placed.

P.S. you might want to ask this question on the Pre-Med/Medical School forum.

I had a friend who was in the program and she absolutely despised it. Not only does half the people I know who go to NYIT not like the school, but she said the program itself was terrible. She disliked most of the teachers and she felt they inadequately prepared her for the DO part. She ended up dropping out

Thank God, I was about to apply to this program before she warned me.

I also know someone who hated this program and was able to transfer second year to a similar program in a different state and is much happier there.

That being the case, I am going to be one of the rare CC parents who suggests avoiding these combined programs if you can afford to pass up the financial savings. The top high school students who can get into these programs should not be the ones being shut out of medical school four years later.
