What area do most students live at CAL?

Where do most students live? Is richmond an area alot of students live in?

Anyone know anything about Richmond area?

NO! Avoid Richmond!

Hahahaha, well, okay, Richmond isn’t ALL bad, but if possible, I personally would not live in Richmond. Right now I live in Vallejo, and when I transfer to Berkeley in the fall I will be living in Berkeley! Another good place that is pretty near by is Emeryville. There are some nice parts near Oakland and a FEW in the El Cerrito area, but those areas also both contain parts I wouldn’t go in with a police escort!

When looking for housing in the East Bay, be careful! I don’t really think anything bad will happen to you if you move to Richmond, but do know that Richmond has very large volumes of both violent crime as well as property crime! So be cautious!

VERY few students live outside the Berkeley area. SOME live in Oakland and Albany. Richmond and Oakland have some VERY bad neighbourhoods (like terribly horrible) and Richmond is generally not very close or convinient to campus. I don’t mean to knock Richmond too hard because there are definitely nicer parts, but even living in one of those areas would not be safe, for instance, walking home after a night out or a late study session.

That being said there are some not so nice areas of Berkeley, too. Be careful with Oakland too, because although there are some really trendy areas there are also some pretty rough parts.

Emeryville is okay and one benefit is that you are super close to SF, but again, Emeryville borders West Oakland which is a not so nice area, and the transportation isn’t quite as good in Emeryville (closest BART is Macarthur which can be shady after 7 or 8 pm).

My sisters live in San Leandro and they commute to campus but im gonna live in Berkeley sooo yeah

stay away from oakland… my sister lived there a few years ago and it was bad, someone broke into her house and then one time her friend was mugged and robbed when she was right outside the appartment…

San Leandro is too far to commute to Berkeley every day. Also, OP, if you are going to Cal you might as well live in Berkeley and get the full experience. It is a unique and wonderful place to live and you won’t get the same college experience living in one of the neighbouring towns.

@nadiavar — that stinks that your sis had that happen to her! A good friend of mine also had a break-in in Oakland. Don’t totally discount it though because there are some very nice areas (Rockridge, Temescal, Piedmont and Montclair areas) that are great places for young people to live.

the nice places r a pain to pay for… lol and yeah san leandro is far but rent is cheap so it really comes down to if money is an issue or not… try to find a place in berkeley though it’s ur best option if you want to have the full experience
