Well, my parents are white but my mom lived in Taiwan for 15 years and is always speaking Mandarin to me. She knows I don't understand it. What the heck.

Both my parents are mainland Chinese, and I was born in Beijing...moved to the US when I was four. I can speak Mandarin pretty well, but I can't read or write it.

My situation is similar to yanners's. I was born in Hangzhou, China, and immigrated to the U.S. when I was six (bordering on seven). I can speak Mandarin pretty fluently, but I'm pretty much considered illiterate.

Born in mainland china, moved to nj at age 3.

Better question:

What type of Asian aren't I?

Philippines!

I'm half Asian. China, holla! ;)

I'm proud to be different --- I'm not Mandarin. (No offense, just that everyone who is Chinese is Mandarin, and that's no fun.) I'm CANTONESE yes!

My mother is all Asian, my dad is African-American (among other things, but that's not my point.)

She was born in Hong Kong. Represent?

sweetsaz,

That's different? A large proportion of the Chinese population in San Francisco is Cantonese. Not very unique at all. Sorry! Most of the Chinese I know in California are Cantos. :)

Both my parents are from India. I'm south Indian, from Andhra Pradesh, and I came to the US when i was six :) I speak telugu.

Okay? Congratulations to the state of California! claps

I'm just saying I'm glad not to be in the MAJORITY, so don't try to knock me down, okay?

Sure, over there it may not be different in California, but in New Jersey I'd say its VERY DIFFERENT. So please do not speak for me, when I am just talking about MY REGION. Thank you.

Seriously, I didn't mean to come off like I was the ONLY CANTONESE person out there. I don't care how many are in California...

Just because you have experienced that, does not mean that applies to everyone else. It's certainly not true in my case.
