I am curious as to what novels are being emphasized in the course. We have a read a wide selection in my AP English Literature class. Some of the novels/epics our teacher chose I have not seen used at all in the free-response section; instead, I believe she chose them to particularly help us become familiar with the writing style of the time period. We have read the following: Beowulf, Grendel, Madame Bovary, The Awakening, Death of a Salesman, The Metamorphosis, Their Eyes Were Watching God, Beloved, and The Canterbury Tales. We will finish the year right before the AP exam with A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man and Heart of Darkness.

we've read: Macbeth, Heart of Darkness, Their Eyes were watching God, The Canterbury Tales, The Bluest Eye, Beowulf, the awakening we did a poetry study, Wuthering Heights, and The Mayor of Casterbridge..

oh i must read A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man, I borrowed what I thought was the actual book but it turned out to be the notes on it.

the awakening too

todd.. those books are on the ap list so you shouldn't be worried. As far as the open ended response question, I would think any of those books would apply.. the question is always broad so you'll have plenty of examples to choose from.

I'm currently a junior and my AP Language class has read: Once and Future King, Canterbury Tales, Mayor of Casterbridge, Equus, Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man, French Lieutenant's Woman, Hamlet, Clockwork Orange, Beowulf, Grendel, and selected poems from 1000 AD -> 2000 AD.

AP English is offered senior year only in my school. Amazingly, I've read 90% of all the books aforementioned. And most of them sophomore/freshman year. Next Year should be great! :)

It just depends by school.. some of the books mentioned (great gatsby, bluest eye, scarlett letter) i've read in previous years. The AP list is long, meaning there are a number of books you could or could not have previously read. Each school has a different curriculum.. not necessarily better or worse than another.
