I'm planning on enlisting in the military after high school but also want to get my college education while enlisted. I know that I want to get a degree in International Relations and minor in Arabic. I know know I want to enlist and my major I just don't know which branch to go to.I want the military to pay for my education and I want my job in the military to go along with my degree. I don't want to enlist in the Marines or Cost Guard. So which branch out of the Army, Navy, and Air Force will encourage my education and has good programs with well known university's.

Your academic qualifications do not make the service academies or ROTC scholarships potentially realistic options?

I was considering ROTC. If your talking about academic qualifications you mean how I do in school then I have
a 3.7 GPA and has never dropped below a 3.5. Senior year I only have 1 AP (Macroeconomics) and 2 half year college courses( International Relations and World history until 1500), Honors English but academic physics and math. I already have 2 teachers agree to give me recommendations. I don’t play any sports. I am in the red cross club and a current peer mentor in my school. I also have little over 120 hours of volunteer hours at a hospital. I got a 1490 on my SAT and still waiting or my ACT scores. I am a smart person but not great with standardized tests.
But I did get a 76 on the ASVAB on my first try sophomore year.

I this the academic qualifications you mean. I be honest I’m not sure if ROTC is realistic. Everyone I ask says I wont get it because my test scores aren’t competitive and they only want technical degrees so I shouldn’t try so I figured enlisted was to best way to go to pay for school.

Not sure that any of the branches are going to assign enlisted personnel to jobs that will allow you to work in International Relations. As for the minor in Arabic…that would depend on how well you speak Arabic/Farsi currently.

Is your plan:
- to take college classes while you are enlisted (and working 40+ hours a week)
- to do your time and then use something like the GI Bill to finance school after you get out
- apply for something like a Green to Gold Program?

That’s my basic plan but I was hoping that there was a program besides ROTC for enlisted servicemen can get a 4 year degree while enlisted and not after I get out. I want to know if there was something where I can work on base but commute to a state college close by. Like attend American University while working on an Air Force base 30 minutes away. I don’t know if that’s what you meant.

There is actually a program I think (or used to be) where if your a GREAT enlisted with GREAT academic ability you get paid full time to go to college (about 25000) plus your tuition is paid for by the service.

The only programs that I know about are the green to gold (or blue to gold) and applying to one of the SAs from active duty. Either way…before you enlist you should make sure you know exactly which commissioning/college programs you are eligible for and WHEN/HOW you need to apply. Do NOT ask a recruiter. Ask a ROTC officer that is specifically assigned to work with people in these programs. Most of the commissioning websites have either toll free numbers or email addresses.
Good Luck!

Enlisted servicemembers may also apply to the service academies.
