I think I remember hearing that no freshmen get internships. So what can we do then? I know that there are classes in the summer but I think I'll need a break from school. Is there a way to do like an internship for no pay or something? I don't want to waste a whole summer. I'm in CoE, btw, and will most likely major in aerospace.

What are you talking about? I had a solid internship the summer BEFORE my freshman year. It's not that hard to get an internship. Granted, it really depends on your location. Here in NYC there are a lot of opportunities.

rkbgt,
I am in CoE and managed to get an internship after my freshman year. However, it was mostly administrative work (lots of Excel) rather than engineering since you don't actually take engineering classes until sophomore year. It was paid though- almost every engineering internship is, so you're in good shape! Look at websites of local companies and see if they have any postings...I live near a major city and found a large corporation that had a posting. Don't be afraid to apply even if you think you aren't quite qualified- the company will decide that!

Unfortunately, it looks like this summer will be rather lean on opportunities because of the economy. If you don't manage to find an internship, possibly you could study abroad, do research, or volunteer. All of those would be good uses of your time.

Hope this helps!

If you don't mind being in Ann Arbor all summer, consider applying for one of the UROP summer fellowships. They have one for engineers. Here's the link:
