What can I do in the next 3 years to distinguish myself and get accepted to these colleges?

How do you know you will be able to fluently speak all these languages by graduation? (Well, english you seem to already have gotten the hang of)
Don’t do everything just for the colleges. If you make out a plan to do ____ and _____ and be president of _____ to get into Harvard, you will be miserable. Just do what you like and don’t force yourself to try to ‘distinguish’ yourself. You will not stand out if you force it; if you simply be yourself, do what you want and work hard in school, the right college will notice you. It might not be Harvard, and that will be okay. Obviously work hard in school to get high grades so you can learn what you need to do well in college, but do not just join clubs to get into a university. This might not be the advice you want, but it’s the advice you should take.

Develop a passion for something. If you have a passion for business, then create your own business, start a business club, take DECA more seriously. Colleges love applicants with a passion that can be demonstrated through a variety of focused EC’s. All the better if you start developing those EC’s at Freshman year.

Leadership, Colleges also love applicants with leadership positions at school and outside of school. These positions can vary, however, the ones with the most “wow” factor are: Class President, Editor and Chief of a School Newspaper/Magazine/Yearbook, President/Founder of a Club, Varsity team captain.

Community Service. You seem to lack community service, this is a must for colleges. Help out at your local homeless shelter, hospital, or even join a service club. Just start stacking up those hours early.

Your extensive languages are good, but they are useless if you don’t put them to good use. You can also add to Work Experience by becoming a translator or just something to do with your passion. If its business, then you can apply for internships.

But the most important factor is your grades. SAT I and II matter as well, however you should always take school seriously, even freshman year. I would hate to see someone slack off freshman year just because they weren’t warned that it counts, BIG TIME. But hey, you seem to be doing just all right. Keep up the good work, and i’m sure you can achieve your goals.

If I could go back to 9th grade, the one thing I would change is the ridiculous amount of irrelevant EC’s I did. Not that EC’s aren’t important, just make sure you choose quality over quantity. I just signed up for whatever I thought would look good on a college app and never thought about if I was actually passionate about it. Make sure whatever you do is what you love. That being said, it is important to keep in mind that there are some things that colleges look for that you should try to implement your passions into. For example, start a club. You want to show that you are a leader and that you take initiative towards the things you care about. In whatever EC you do, make sure you are in a leadership position. Also, keep your grades high! While grades are not everything, it sure does make it easier. Try to keep a 4. if you can, I know it is difficult, but it’s more than worth it. Also, summer internships, especially out of state ones that you either get paid for or got a scholarship to do (basically you just didn’t sign up and have your parents pay for it) look great. Try to do things that are uncommon and will stand out on your app. Start a unique charity, or begin your own business, write a book that makes the best selling list. While all these things so impressive, they’re easy to do if you set your mind on it. Also, study for your SATs/ACTs like crazy. Those tests are so easy, all you have to do is understand the way their set up and keep track of your progress. I recommend getting a prep-book (i recommend the ‘Real-ACT’ book if you’re taking the ACT) and do a practice test once a month for your entire 9th grade year. After you take the test, go through and make a list of the problems you got wrong. Take the problems and make a chart of which types of problems you get wrong. Then, just figure out what you’re doing wrong and fix it on the next test. Know what they’re looking for in the essays. Honestly, if you study for the next 3 years, getting a high 30 on your ACT should be a piece of cake. Goodluck!
