What can I do over the summer that will add to my resume?

Does anyone else notice the similarity between satira and satire?

It’s almost as though they’re a satire of a parent. Shocking.

^ The poster is satirizing certain parents. Look at the posts. :)

In retrospect it’s not very well veiled. Such a sad comment on this website…

Don’t do volunteer work. Like I said before, it’s cliche. Start on a project of your own, research something independently. A whole lot of essays for college ask about what research you’ve been doing or what interests you intellectually (Stanford), and it’s great if you can write about something you spent a whole summer on.

HAHAHAHAHAHA! I get it ;)

Woo! Another transcript whore! Gotta love 'em. Whatever happened to doing things because you enjoyed them, not because you wanted to fill up a resume?

Don’t do **** just to “add to your resume.” That’s a ******** way of life - doing things to make other people happy and be accepted by other people. Do what you want to do, not what is most “prestigious” (which, in my opinion, is one of the worst concepts ever conceived). In my opinion you should bike around your state and live like a nomad for three months. It would probably be more fulfilling than “hospital volunteering.”

I LOVE that idea. You get a medal. :)

Volunteering is cliche? You could say that when you’re going to the soup kitchen every Tuesday, but don’t tell me that nobody can find a little bit of more appreciation out of life after organizing events at a center for the developmentally disabled, delivering meals for the homeless, and coordinating parties for the elderly. Just because something isn’t “intellectual” or doesn’t require you to travel to Africa doesn’t mean you can’t find meaning in it. Volunteering has just been so overused on applications that those who actually have a passion for committing to the community aren’t getting as much credit as they deserve. This sounds like a rant. Oops.

from your username you sound like a computer nerd. why don’t you program something really cool and write about it in your essay? that way you (a) get to do something you love (b) get to tell colleges you’re doing something you love (c) end up with a really cool finished product, plus better computer skills (which will help you immeasurably if you ever want to do research or something)

do something you like to do…it kinda annoys me when people only pick summer stuff b/c they can improve resume. what kind of life is that when you only do what looks good? just go do something you like to do that’s within your reach.

This is my favorite post ever.
