Will be taking my SAT in May. Oh another question, what kind of SAT scores do I need to get to be competitive in the admissions process?

Looks good. Class rank is important.

If you’re not going to SLS you may want to begin a dialogue with a local Admissions Representative who will be able to provide some meaningful guidance.

Prep well for the SAT. This is cc legend, but we’ve sometimes seen that 1400+ is a meaningful score, although quite a few appointees are in the 1300’s.

Sometime this summer reach out to your nomination sources. Try to get as much of the application process completed during the summer - you’ll appreciate it during senior year. Let teachers know you may contact them to write recs for you. They’ll appreciate being able to do so before the school year starts.

Good luck and let us know how you’re progressing.

You look fine. Do well on the SAT and you should have no worries.

Quick question on recs: For the congressional nominations it requires 3 recs; at least one from a school counselor or principal. Are these completely separate from the letters of rec from my chem/math/english teacher? If I have more than three people who want to write a letter of rec what should I do? Are letters of rec from certain people better than others? For example is a coach better than a teacher?
And thanks for the help!

My son had letters of rec from teachers, a coach, a church youth minister, and a former military officer who has known him since he was born. In short, use who knows you well as a student, a leader, and a person of character; and can speak to your potential to succeed as a cadet.

Oh, it should go without saying, but … make sure they have the ability to communicate effectively and can write well.

Just took the SAT…I am nervous to see what I got on it.
What type of score would be good for me to get in order to improve my chances to be accepted into Westpoint? I know WP only takes CR and Math…

WP looks at all 3 sections including writing. And well over 2000 would put you in a good spot.

Please remember to share your May SAT result when it becomes ava.

Will do! Results are available online May 20th…needless to say I have a countdown on my calendar. I feel like this will break or make my application, hopefully the latter…

It’s too early to break your application. You can take the exam again in the fall after prepping over the summer. Don’t worry yet.

Good news and bad news…we’ll start with the bad.
SAT scores = terrible. CR = 570, Math = 620 and Writing doesn’t matter but 590
I will definitely be studying hard for the fall tests…

Good news…
I was elected National Honor Society President this last week, which is a great honor and I am so excited. I was also selected to be one of 8 A-Team members of the Link Crew. Link Crew is a club designed to welcome incoming freshmen, and the A-Team members organize everything.

Sorry I haven’t posted anything in a while!

Kelsey Jang

The SAT scores aren’t “terrible”, so take it again and you will improve. Also take the ACT as your scores very well might improve. And don’t believe what you may hear from some authorities or those “in the know” about not being able to increase your SAT scores more than 100 points. I’ve seen it time and again folks raising their scores by hundreds of points. But do take the ACT, you might be surprised at seeing better test scores since the test is very different from the SAT.

Kelsey,
Your scores are not bad but has room for improvement. Your leadership role is great. It will make up any disadvantage of the scores the way it is.
If you can work on the SAT this summer it will be good. Also, try ACT. Many people score better on the ACT. I score way better on ACT. I think you should look into that. You still have some time before the last test dates of December 10 or January of 11.
If there is anything I can help, please let me know.
Elan

Thank you again so much for the feedback,
I will study hard for the fall SAT and sign up for the ACT as well, hopefully I will have better luck with that.
Question: I know that congressional nominations require letters of recommendation, but does Westpoint ask for other letters of rec in the application? If so, how many and from whom?

Yes. West point also require recommendation letters. They are also very specific.
If I remember correctly, 1 has to come from a Math teacher; 1 from English teacher; last 1…I don’t remember.

The very important thing to remember: Your teachers don’t need to write the letters (I am sure it is nice if they do). They need to fill out the WP reference form with check boxes.

These boxes are extremely important as you will get points based on which boxes are checked. Please remember to not overlook that form.

Elan Xu

The 3 rec for WP is from either your physics or chemistry teacher.

Thank you for all the advice, I notified my teachers.

Some more updates…
I recently found out that I was elected to be a Softball Captain for the 2010-2011 school year, and I am pumped for that! I was also voted by coaches to be All-Wesco Honorable Mention (for the league my school is in). Not quite what I was hoping for but I have motivation to prove those coaches wrong and do better next year!

I have applied to west point online via their questionnaire. They sent me replies by mail to send SAT Scores and transcript through six semesters, which I have done. Now all it seems I need to do before I can get farther on in the process is get a Congressional Nomination. I am at a loss about when I am needing these teacher recommendations. Does West Point only request those after they make a favorable review of an applicant’s scores/transcript/leadership qualities?

get them early if you can.
