Im an average high school student, currently in freshmen year. I have A’s B’s and one C in a class (my only AP class, AP World History). Im doing everything possible to set myself apart from other students since my grades aren’t good. This year I’m only in philosophy club and i auditioned for performing arts, which is a program my school offers. Im going for photography. Ive been doing some research and ive decided im going to do as many extra curriculars during summer as i can. This summer ill be volunteering at a hospital. For upcoming summers i plan to volunteer at a school, take EMT classes, shadow a physician, etc. Besides this im hoping to join more clubs (key club, national honor society, etc). Basically anything that helps my chances of getting into college. If anyone has any suggestions that’ll help me id really appreciate them.
Spend more time focusing on academics. You want to pull up your GPA. You should get ahead in your classes, and keep ahead in your classes.
Don’t take AP classes that you aren’t ready for.
thanks for the quick reply. ill definitely be working on improving my grades. AP world is definitely a challenge but im powering through it
Don’t go for quantity over quality of extracurricular activities. You don’t need to adopt “as many extracurriculars as you can”; what colleges want to see is continuous devotion to a select few activities that require an investment of time and preferably reflect your unique interests.
Have a story.
Don’t waste your time on unimpactful extracurriculars. You would be just wasting your time if you joined Key Club just so you could write it on your application. Shadowing and internships and other things along those lines are good. But don’t do anything that doesn’t interest you. Go deep into what you love doing.
im trying to find as many local activities that work with my interest, finding it a bit hard. volunteering at a hospital is the only relevant once, since i want to be a physician. thank you for your reply
thats great advice ill definitely take that into consideration. i think im going to shadow a doctor this summer since its what most interests me. thank you for your reply.
