Self-explanatory. We've talked majors, let's hear it for careers. We all think about them, and maybe there'll be some good ideas (or just a place to vent) here.

I dream of being an epidemiologist. I really hope it turns out to be a good fit. Hopefully, I can find someone to shadow soon.

I’d hate to end up premed for whatever reason and become a doctor. I come from a line of doctors, and it does not appeal to me AT ALL. Same goes for engineering and becoming a lawyer, both of which people have tried to push me into, but the family legacy isn’t reason enough for me. Not completely sure what else I’d dread, but I’m sure I could pick out more if I had a list of careers in front of me.

Chairman of the federal reserve, CEO of a large company, or president of the United States =D

I’d love to be a veterinarian, or work in some other health-related profession.

I wouldn’t like to be a lawyer or go into business. I just find them boring, personally.

Fellow animal-lover here.

Baseball operations for a Major League Baseball team.

I would absolutely love to be able to be a vocalist in a successful band… if it weren’t for the fact that I’m not particularly good at singing by any means. I’d also love to work for a video game magazine, or be an actor. xD

I would hate… hm. Being stuck picking up trash and such, or being an accountant.

I’d love to be working in UN reform or US Foreign Policy specifically humanitarian intervention. Or first female president!

Would hate to be homeless? Lol. I wouldn’t mind being a doc or a business person but it’s too boring for me.

My dream career is an art profession. Animator, illustrator, storyboard artist, comic book/graphic novel artist, concept artist, something like that. Preferably in the film industry or comic book industry.

I dread mostly everything else. Especially retail. I’d hate to work in retail.

I dream of becoming a screenwriter and/or at least working on the production aspect of television and movie studios.

I dread being a teacher. I hate that teaching has become the universal career choice for a lot of people just because it’s an available job. After seeing what a lot of teachers I know went through and how disrespectful kids are, I would never want to go through that. Some people have a passion for it, but I would rather not teach.

Lethal Fairy Yes! I also dread working in retail forever. I work in retail now, and it’s a good job to have to get you through school. I would rather not be stuck here forever. Some people like it and don’t mind it. I’m not one of those people.

I dread being anything famous where people are constantly analyzing you.

I dream of being a mailman or bulldozer driver

Dream career: Astronautical engineer for NASA or being an Imagineer could be fun (assuming Disney doesn’t still suck).

Dread: Anything that involves me being nice to snotty customers with no potential of rising in my career.

Dream job (both can technically never happen because I a) have terrible vision and b) I was not born in the US) : either a space shuttle pilot going to Mars or US Secretary of State.

Cool jobs that are attainable: International security consultant, curator of the National Gallery in London, college economics professor at a small, prestigious liberal arts college, or chief prosecutor at the ICC.

Dreadful jobs (in my view): Any kind of Wall Street job where you literally work 100 hours a week, dentist (extremely boring), anything to do with PR or publicity.

“International security consultant”

***?

In some ways, if I had few financial worries, I would almost take it upon myself to teach and do it well; not only this, but try to influence the high school I taught at to change for the better. I think a key to being a good teacher is to actively look out for your students, show them you care, but also be very difficult in the first 3 weeks of class, so they know not to blow you off. If I taught a calculus class, I’d make sure I let all the cocky kids know what it feels like to fail miserably, so that they actually grow up and go into college prepared.

Good choice bluebubbles – teaching at the university level would be closer to something I’d realistically pursue. But my first paragraph isn’t empty – I think there are people better positioned to do it than I am, but I think there are tons of high schools that could use better teachers.

What I dread: doing any career that I land on just to pay the bills, where my intelligence and/or mathematical talent is not valued.

All very diverse answers you’re all giving, interesting.

That’s not so terrible to me if it results in terrific money early on – as long as one knows where to quit! I wouldn’t like to end up doing it, but wouldn’t mind it as long as it doesn’t just pay the bills and opens me up to some freedom and security.

An academic job can give one job security and some degree of freedom for family life, etc. A highly financially rewarding job can lead one to be able to take a lower paying, but otherwise rewarding lifestyle up, while having lots of wiggle room.

I see why someone would hate a Wall Street job, however.

^ Ha I can see how some people would like it! I’m just not a “I need tons of money” person and I absolutely hate the whole “notion” of wall street. Also, pure finance stuff just seems boring. I’m sure it can be an interesting and rewarding profession for the right people though. I’m not cut out for it.

I’d love to become a history professor at a top tier university, maybe even Ivy League. Being a lawyer is a close second. Working in the CIA or something would be pretty awesome too, except I’m not sure what exact occupation I could hold there …

I’d dread being stuck as a high school teacher, obviously I’d teach there (hopefully my own high school) to gain some experience but it’s just not something I would do long-term.

People working 100 hours on Wall Street succumb to extreme burnout and basically hate their lives because they have none. Yeah, they make sick money, but not having a social life for years sucks. I dont care how much they make.

I dream of becoming a project manager and being able to direct various engineering projects (I’m majoring in Electrical Engineering).

I dread a job where a routine would cave in and where every day would feel like the same day over and over. I also dread having a job where I can never use my judgment and critical thinking and just have to do what I’m told. I worked as a pay clerk for five summers, simply entering some data in the computer, classifying some files, etc. I’m sick of it.
