What classes are you planning to take?

hazelorb, I got a 4 in APCS which means I cannot get credit for 1110, do you think I’ll do fine if I skip 1110 and take 1111 right away?

Okay, I’ll remove one math class.

The only course I’m currently interested in that is not foreign language or related to my intended major/minor is Introduction to Drawing 1, so I’ll probably go for the Japanese route.

So now my schedule will probably look like this:

MATH 2310 - Calculus III
MATH 3351 - Elementary Linear Algebra
CS 1111 - Introduction to Programming
JAPN 1010 - First-Year Japanese

I have looked up on UVA Japanese, and it does sound very scary, lol.

Cool! 1111 shares TAs with 1110 so I’ll see you around!

Any opinions on Applied Calc verses Calc I for Biochem majors? Any reason to take the harder class of Calc I?

[Department of Chemistry | B.Sc. Specialization in Biochemistry](http://chem.virginia.edu/undergraduate-studies/chemistry-major/bsc-with-specialization-in-biochemistry/) says you should take 1310 and 1320 (“strongly recommends”) – basically if you need to take more math for any reason, 1210/1220 does NOT allow you to do this. 1210 is really a lot easier though…

I just registered for my classes at summer orientation. I was able to get all my classes listed above with the addition of badminton (to fill up to 15 credits). I would have liked tennis or swimming (don’t know how to swim), but all the tennis classes seem to be filled up, and the swimming class conflicts with the schedule–though swimming wouldn’t conflict if I got the full Elementary Linear Algebra class.

By the way, does anyone know how much work the CS1111 class has? The Japanese class I registered in is from 2:00-2:50PM. Since I’m still pretty scared of the Japanese class, I would like time in the afternoon to study for it. CS1111 is 3:30-4:45PM on Mon and Wed, so I’m hoping that it doesn’t require too much outside-class time.

If you have prior experience 1111 won’t be very much work (hard, not time). There is always time associated with CS classes. I used to bring my laptop and do labs/hw in class during lecture. You can proly fit it in during the weekend though. There are weekly assignments (or bi-weekly) so not every day type of stuff, so you should be able to schedule when you do it if that makes sense (not like Japanese where hw will be every day is my guess).

Can somebody recommend a class that fulfills both the Non-Western and humanities requirements?

For my NWP I took Archaeoastronomy, which also fulfills one of the science classes obviously. It does have a tiny bit of math, but it’s more like the history of astronomy, like the Mayans, Chinese, Egyptians, and so on. It was a great class, it wasn’t a ridiculous amount of work but there were a few homework assignments and a 5 page paper (not that much work, but not a gut class either – very manageable and enjoyable).

Does this schedule look manageable?

Calculus II
Principles of Microeconomics
Introduction to Programming (1110)
Introduction to Moral and Political Philosophy
Anthropology of Religion

16 credits in total

That’s not an easy schedule, but it won’t kill you. Again I would just say, what do you want to manage versus how much can you handle, it is your first semester and if you would rather have more time to socialize and relax then you might reconsider taking more than 15 credits…

Do you know if intro to philosophy is a prerequisite? None of the philosophy classes list their prerequisites so it’s a little confusing.

according to http://www.virginia.edu/philosophy/Fall%202010%20courses.pdf</a> which i found via googling uva philosophy, it says courses under 3000 don’t have prerequisites.

So, here’s my schedule so far.

COMM 1800-Making Business Work
ECON 2010-Principles of Microeconomics
STATS 2120-Intro to Statistical Analysis
An ENWR class, not sure which one yet. Maybe Pavilion Writers, but I don’t see ENWR 2150 on SIS?
PSYC 2700-Intro to Child Psychology

Which adds up to 15 credits. I would take fewer if I could, but I’m Echols so I can’t dip below 15. Is this schedule too tough? Are there any classes I should hold off on?

I think that actually sounds like a great schedule! I don’t know about the enwr though, sorry.

Thanks, hazelorb!

I am a Biology major, hoping to go pre-med. I feel as if I’ve forgotten everything biology-related over the summer, so would it be a good idea to take Bio 201, just to brush up on things?

UVA 2nd-, 3rd-, and 4th-years, have you taken any of these classes or had any of these professors? If so, any general feedback or comments regarding them (or this schedule in general) would be much appreciated. :)

LNGS 325 - Intro to Linguistic Theory + Analysis (M. Elson)
MDST 200 - Intro to Media Studies (B. Williams)
PSYC 230 - Intro to Perception (D. Proffitt)
RUSS 301 - Third-Year Russian (E. Dianina)
RUSS 303 - Intermediate Conversation (?)

(I’ve checked out thecourseforum, but I’d like to hear from CC people, too.)
