Hello. Here I will tell you the classes I plan to take. I am in 9th grade. Can you please recommend some classes to go in the empty spots? I want to become some sort of scientist but I am not involved in any extracurricular activities, so the classes I choose will be very important. I'm trying to figure out a four year plan for high school. I want to get into a UC. The ones I need help on will have question marks.

The math you would probably want to take would be Multivariable Calculus, which is not an AP course.

With a good ACT/SAT score, if you get A’s and B’s, you could probably get into a UC without any EC’s! That is a very tough schedule. You will have your work cut out for you, and I wish you luck.

It might be possible to take multivariable at a local college. (I still don’t understand why you don’t plan to do ECs. They have plenty of benefits outside of college admissions.)

“I want to go to a UC” is pretty vague, though. Be more specific. Getting into Berkeley out-of-state is quite a lot different than getting into one of the lesser-known ones as a California resident.

 another persont taking an ap class in 9th grade and more than one in 10th grade?! omg i am going to have to stop visiting this site this is not good for my self esteem

I live in southern california and I want to go to one of the really good ones, like UCLA or UCSD. I get free tuition at ucs and cal states because my father was in the military. And I’m not very good socially that’s why I’m not in any extracurriculars like clubs or sports.

You don’t have to be social in some clubs or sports. In track for example all you have to do is run fast; we had a guy on the 4x400m who would rarely speak to anyone. Also math team could be an option; you don’t really have to talk much for that

In any case, ECs don’t have to involve other people. Music, art, even writing can be ECs. Summer jobs/programs/internships/volunteer work count as ECs, and you don’t usually have to deal with people from school. If you like math, study for the AMC 10. If you like art, send something in to Scholastic Art & Writing.

Seriously, one of the dumbest things you can do is not participate in ECs. They’re what set you apart from all the other kids applying who have taken the same classes as you.
And since you’re a freshman, I don’t really understand what the issue is here… go sign up for some ECs!

(And remember that ECs don’t have to be things that require signing up…people seem to equate “extracurriculars” with “school clubs” for some reason, but it’s broader than that. Is homework really the only productive thing you do outside of school? If not, then you probably already have ECs.)

do you mean ap gov AND ap econ? that seems quite miserable, considering the other classes you’re taking.

ap stats? that’s pretty much all that’s left, ap wise. i took a course equivalent to precalc in 10th grade, then junior year i took ap stats, and now i’m taking ap calc bc, as a senior. i would recommend that someone who’s not crazy about math do the same, but it is a little difficult with the gap year in between precalc and calc.

easy.

LOL good luck. but if it’s ap c, then take it after calc (if that’s the case, ignore what i said earlier about the math sequence. i would take ap calc junior year and then ap stats and ap physics senior year. then of course take apes junior year).

but why no ap biology or ap chem? i think colleges prefer that over apes, but i’m not sure.

Your classes are very important yes - but you still need extracurriculars of some sort, even if its just a babysitting gig or you volunteer at the local pool - something to prove to colleges that you’re not a curriculum slave.

Yes, Ap gov and econ in one year. I have to take it to graduate. For the math, do you think AP stats is challenging enough for someone who wants to go into biology? For the science, I am taking chemistry right now, I am taking AP biology next year. What should I take instead of AP environmental science?

oops, didn’t see that. and if you’re good at chem, then take ap chemistry. i’ve taken both ap chem and apes, and ap chem is much more challenging. but it’s not that hard. apes is just insanely easy. your teacher affects things a lot, but just speaking of curriculum.

oh and ap stats is useful for ap bio as a class (though you’re not taking bio until after), and for the field of biology in general.

You know what? I’m just gonna do I.B. Then I won’t have to make all these tough decisions and I’ll be pretty much guaranteed to get into a good college.
