I’m in the biochem/mcb major and I picked up this sheet that told me what ap classes to skip. I have a 5 in bio, a 3 in chem, and hopefully a 5 in calc bc. Should i skip any of the classes?
they say i can skip math 1a and 1b
chem 1a
and bio 1a and 1b
what do you guys suggest i skip and what should i take?

AP classes could never compare to Cal classes.

Although I'm not an actual student yet, I'll be going there so listen to what I have to say.

What's most important to you? Learning a lot (by taking more classes)? Or having a higher GPA?

If you want a good GPA, its probably best to just take the class because you'll know at least a little bit about it and will have a considerable advantage over others (you will set the curve.) If you browse around the forum, you'll notice that a curve-setting Berkeley student is a happy Berkeley student.

I have over 40 AP credits but I don't think I will actually use them for this reason. Just a little info to think about as you decide.....

Thanks =) I think i'll skip math completely though and take bio . we'll see haha

MzLover3 - Out of curiosity, have you decided on what to major? (This is pure curiosity on my part; you don't have to answer if you don't want to. :]) I completely, totally agree with you on how no AP course can be compared to a Berkeley course. However, I myself have been debating whether or not to use my 5 in Calc BC to skip out of Math 1A and 1B. This is simply because I'm planning to double-major English and MCB, and MCB has the only math requirements (which are Math 1A and 1B). I wouldn't consider skipping out of anything, either, if I weren't making double-majoring my goal. If using my AP credits to skip out will help me manage my time a little better, I'd definitely consider it.

skip out of 1a and 1b. they are really competitive. But then.. so are 53 and 54. hmm

winterpolaris, my parents think I'm some sort of genius and want me to do four majors.

But I REALLY don't see it happening....

All I know is that it'll most likely be something in the social sciences...or maybe even biology.

If you get a 5 on Calculus BC, then definitely skip math 1ab.
Out of all the APs, Calculus is the one that is the MOST like the college level classes... so if you do well on the AP exam, you can feel confident about skipping math 1ab.

As for th 5 in AP Bio, I would skip out of bio 1ab only if you will be taking more advanced classes... MCB warns its students that if you are planning on going to med school, you might want to consider taking bio 1ab anyway...

As for chemistry... I would NOT skip any chemistry with a score of 3... the reality is that if you jump into the next higher class, you will be competing with kids who did much better on the AP exam, or who are fresh off of taking chem 1a... to be honest, I'm REALLY suprised berkeley allows any credit at all for a score of 3.

the college of chemistry gives 5.3 units of elective credit for a 3, but even a 5 will earn u NOTHING towards any requirements and chemistry credit,

so my 5 is useless :), anyone know what can be done with the elective credit? i guess iw ont have to take any/less extra classes out of the reqiurements?

ah well i never planned on skipping chem 1a since i knew a 3 was worth nothing, but I'm thinking about double majoring so i guess i'll talk to the counsellors about bio and math
