What college do you think I am a good fit for?

I am upcoming high school sophomore and I may apply to Bard College at Simon's Rock next year. It is an early college. I would like a back up in case it does not work out. I have a 3.198 and an 87.198 GPA. I ended up getting 2 72's in accel math both semesters and I have an 83 and 84 on the transcript from first semester. I didn't have the best math teacher and about 7 kids failed the class first semester. I have a class rank, but it's unweighted. I am top 50% with it unweighted though. I was in all honors classes and one AP and the schedule is the same next year. I may drop down to CP math if I do bad by midterms.

I would like to tell you about myself, so you can suggest schools:

I grew up in the suburbs of South Florida and Georgia. I currently am in Georgia.
I would like to be a film actor (theater isn't great), screenwriter or print journalist. I would love to work for a travel magazine and travel the world and take pics. I also like art journalism and like stuff like Variety and FutonCritic. I also wouldn't mind reporting or being a columnist. I have two talent agents now and may want to move to LA someday. I would also love to write for my own TV show and star in it.

I like small class sizes and like more one on one attention. I would not like the greek life or a major sports school. I'm on the varsity swim team, but I wouldn't mind doing some mens volleyball. I would like to be in the Northeast, Midwest, Florida or California. The suburbs and city life is more me, but may like the Berkshires. I am not a country boy at all. I am not a hippy nor preppy/jockish at all. I also am not into all that anime(sp?)/drama club stuff. I also would never want a huge drug school or alcohol school. I'm Roman Catholic/Italian, but my father is Jewish. I tend to go more liberal in politics and I was a huge Hillary fan. I also would like there to be good looking girls and not all nerds. I go to church once a week, but I'm not very religious. I am also have an open mind and like to meet new people. I do not like the South much at all. I do not want to go to a party school, but I want some party atmosphere. I know my GPA has to go up if I stay in high school, I would like to have good scholarship opportunities. I am also not the best standardized test taker. I come from an middle class family, but I do have two brothers (one whom is a year older and wants to be a chef). My mom is having another baby, so I would have three siblings.

Here are some schools which are on my list, tell me if you have any suggestions for other school or if you like or dislike my list:

UGA (safety), Marlboro, West Georgia (safety), Flagler, Point Park, Purchase, IU- Bloomington, Mizzou, Sarah Lawrence, Bennington, Hampshire, Ithaca, American, Loyola, George Washington, Lehigh, Chapman, Susquehanna, Muhlenberg, College of Holy Cross, Villanova, NYU, USC, Kenyon, Syracuse Newhouse, Wesleyan, Reed, Bowdoin, Lewis and Clark, Lake Forest, Northwestern, Yale, Columbia, Bard and UNC- Chapel Hill.

I picked some schools because there known for a good journalism program. I may like to go and have a MFA in Dramatic Writing such as NYU Asia. I do like Chapman's BFA Screen Acting program. I like NYU, USC, Northwestern, Sarah Lawrence and George Washington the best.

Thanks and I appreciate all the time and effort! Have a nice day.

early - I see in your other posts a student who is willing to express opinions on a variety of subjects. That’s a good thing. But it’s not enough to recommend skipping your senior year of HS. Two more years of HS will help you enormously IMHO.

Yeah, I would be skipping two years. My outlook is to see what happens, but I wanted to know what college is a good fit for me? If SR does not work out.

Perhaps I’m not understanding. Are you looking for a college that will accept you next year if Bard doesn’t accept you? Or for a school that would be right for you two years hence when you graduate HS?

I am going to be a sophomore, so three years. Simon’s Rock was the only school I want to go to early. I am asking what school would be right hence when I graduate high school?

OK, here’s what I can suggest for a HS Freshman who’s outgoing enough to have completed 857 posts:

Pick three schools (or five) that appeal to you most today. Let’s say that’s Chapman, UGA, Kenyon, Syracuse Newhouse, and Northwestern. Learn a little about each, and see which schools become more appealing over time. The goal is to figure out what’s MOST important to you in a school. Picking schools is much easier when you have that.

[It probably goes without saying that having Wesleyan and West Georgia on the same prospects list is, well, very unsettling.]

umm… as your name suggests, i dont think you should be wasting time picking schools or doing any of that now. think about how little sense it makes. you have 4 years of HS, and then 4 years of college. they’re both the same number of years, and arguably equally significant in your development. why waste your HS years worrying about where you’ll end up after those 4 years are over? enjoy this four years, and when they come to an end, that’s when you should research your future. stay in HS and focus on improving your grades, ECs, and then SATs. get off this site!!

I already completed my freshman year. I just wanted to have a back up plan in case SR did not work out. I just wanted some schools you thought were a good fit. I go on this site for AP stuff and for the Theater/Drama board. I also went here to learn more about the Rock.

Here’s my suggestion: If SR doesn’t work out, stop thinking about college until winter of your junior year.

LOL. I am just the type of person who always has to have a plan.

early_college, I would do what most Simon’s Rock students do, apply to Simon’s Rock and if accepted, go there junior and senior year and get an associates degree. After that, transfer to another school and finish your degree in 2 years. If you really don’t like high school and want to get a head start on college, I would recommend Simon’s Rock for you.

and don’t worry, it’s not THAT difficult to get into Simon’s Rock. You basically have sealed the deal for admissions if you keep your current level grades.

Thanks pierre & collegehelp. I was planning on doing exactly of what you say. I was going to go there junior year and then transfer to a top school after 2 years. I want a head start on college too.

I know it’s not that hard to get into, I’m just worried if I get AEP(scholarship which may cover all tuition, but not room and board). Money is an issue, but I’m going to try and find outside scholarships too.

ah I gotcha, I actually was considering applying to Simon’s Rock junior year too but I decided to stick through the rest of high school (though I hated it).

I dunno too much about the AEP scholarship but that’s probably because I thought I didn’t even have a chance at it for me.

Everyone is telling me that I should stick in high school. They say my grades aren’t good enough for the scholarship and I know I cannot afford it if I can’t have the scholarship. I don’t know if I should should apply and see what happens.

you should definitely apply, if not then how would you know if you even would’ve gotten the AEP scholarship?

I know pierre exactly! I don’t understand why I shouldn’t even apply. Also, I would skip junior and senior year.

based on that last response, I think this should be your plan.

Apply to Simon’s Rock College of Bard this upcoming fall

Wait for results, if accepted, look at financial aid and determine if you can afford it (look at it like starting college early so if you don’t get the AEP scholarship but get decent financial aid, it may be the same cost as starting college senior year)

2 paths:
a) Enroll in Simon’s Rock!
b) Research other colleges to see which ones to apply fall of senior year.

I’m going to look for other scholarships too. But I heard I can’t apply to federal/state aid. You have to be an upcoming senior according to other people. Thanks and I like the plan!
